Late night scroll-athons on Instagram might be getting easier on your eyes now that a much-anticipated feature has arrived. Following recent moves from Gmail, WhatsApp , Twitter and Pinterest, Instagram launched its new dark mode feature Tuesday for iOS 13 and Android 10 devices.

Dark mode release hits Instagram.

Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri said in a tweet Tuesday that dark mode is available for both iOS and Android users, though neither app appears to let users toggle the feature within the app itself. There's no word so far on whether that option might become available.

Dark mode finally rolling out for Gmail on Android

Dark mode finally rolling out for Gmail on Android If you spend a lot of time staring at screens all day (and all night, for that matter) many of you are no doubt glad to increasingly have a dark mode option become a more familiar part of your smartphone experience. Personally, Gmail is one of the apps I'm glued to for most of my waking hours, so it's certainly welcome to see that a dark mode for Gmail is finally rolling out. The caveat is that this is for the Android version of the app only, and you’ll need to be running Android 10. Android 10, released more than a week ago, has its own system-wide dark mode.

Instagram will automatically shift to dark mode to reflect your phone settings. If you're using iOS 13 , here's how to try out dark mode for yourself:

  1. Make sure you've updated your Instagram app and are using the latest available version.

  2. Open the Settings app on your iPhone .

  3. Tap Display and Brightness, then tap Dark.

Android 10 users can follow similar steps:

  1. Enable device-wide dark mode on Android by going to Settings, then to Display.

  2. Tap Advanced, then select Dark from the Device theme menu.

Instagram didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Dark mode update for Gmail rolls out to Android 10 phones .
One of the main features of this year's iOS 13 and Android 10 releases is dark mode, a feature supposed to increase battery life on devices featuring OLED screens dramatically. That's a side benefit, as dark mode should make it easier on the eyes to use a smartphone or tablet at night or in low-lit environments. However, one of the issues with dark mode is that, while it's enabled at a system level, some app developers also have to update their apps with dark mode designs so that you can take advantage of dark mode in apps. Google may have brought dark mode to Android 10, but not all of its apps support it.
