Technology Germany synagogue shooter livestreamed attack on Twitch
Shooting near German synagogue was livestreamed on Twitch
A video showed the shooter railing against feminism and denying the Holocaust. The shooter failed to enter the synagogue in Halle, Germany, but wreaked havoc, including the deaths of the two individuals, before driving away. The man used a Galaxy S8 on a helmet to record his crime while wearing a kevlar vest. Wednesday is Yom Kippur, the holiest day for Judaism. Inside the synagogue were 70 to 80 worshipers, according to a local Jewish leader. All were safe and unharmed.
Unfortunately, mass shooters are still. Twitch has to CNBC that the shooter who attacked a synagogue in Halle, Germany was broadcasting the murders on its service. The company has pulled the 35-minute clip and reiterated its "zero-tolerance" policies against hate and violence, adding that it would ban anyone trying to repost the material.
The content doesn't appear to be available on Twitch as of this writing, although CNBC said it found downloadable copies on sites like 4chan (which also had Christchurch shooting videos in that attack's immediate aftermath).
Germany shooting livestreamed despite efforts by tech firms
Just weeks after a broad effort announced by tech platforms to curb the spread of violent content, a video of Wednesday's deadly shooting in the German city of Halle was posted online where it may have been viewed by millions. The news come after the deadly New Zealand mosque shooting livestreamed on Facebook in March, which prompted governments to press social networks to prevent the airing of violent acts on their platforms. On September 23, Facebook announced additional efforts at the United Nations during a meeting with New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, who has taken up the cause of fighting online extremism.
The tragedy underscores the difficulties Twitch, Facebook and other services face with livestreaming video. It's difficult for them to anticipate what someone intends to broadcast, and. This also illustrates the problems with curbing distribution of videos like this. While the original host can quickly remove the clip and prevent uploads of exact copies, it's all too easy for users to upload modified versions or redistribute the footage to sites willing to carry it. As such, it may remain tempting for extremists to livestream knowing that they'll have some kind of audience.
