Scientists have made a mini-heart with a 3D
It's a small heart for the man, but he is hopeless for millions of heart failure patients waiting for a heart transplant. The mini-heart held in his hand by Prof. Tal Dvir of the Faculty of Life Sciences at Tel Aviv University is no more than 2 cm long and 1.4 cm in diameter. "At this stage it is about the size of a rabbit heart," says Professor Dvir. It opens the door to the design of organs as complex as a human heart can be and thus to new possibilities for organ transplantation.
Its particularity is indeed to have been realized thanks to a 3D printer from the cells of a patient. To facilitate the visualization of the three-dimensional structure, researchers at Tel Aviv University colored blue the arteries that normally feed the heart and red the heart muscle. But for now, this prototype is not yet able to beat like a real heart. The scientists explain how they managed to develop it in an article published Monday, April 15 in the.

It is to circumvent the risk of rejection, or the need for immunosuppressive treatment, that this heart was made with reprogrammed fat cells in heart cells. "In this approach, fat tissue is removed from the patient and cellular and acellular (cell-free, NDLR) material is transformed to form various personalized bio inks," explain Pr Tal Dvir and his co-authors
The mini-heart is printed in a personalized hydrogel, "which makes it possible to manufacture large and complex biological structures," add the researchers. They had recently managed to make real patches anatomical using the same process. "However," they explain, "these cardiac patches do not contain a network of blood vessels that can connect to the patient's blood supply."Still many steps
This time, it is theoretically possible. However, there are many steps to complete before building a full, beating, large heart that could be grafted in place of a failing heart, but the Israeli mini-heart could and already, according to its creators, "allow to test drugs on an appropriate anatomical structure."
