Quantum computer vs supercomputer
The leaked draft of the Google paper that recently appeared online explained that the company had posed a statistical math problem to its own prototype quantum processor called Sycamore and the world's fastest supercomputer calledat the Oak Ridge National Lab.
Using the experiment's results, the paper estimated that one of today's top supercomputers would need approximately 10,000 years to do what Sycamore did in 200 seconds.

Google may have made a breakthrough on the path toward creating a viable quantum computer. In a research paper briefly published to NASA's website and only seen by the Financial Times, the company reportedly claims to have achieved a feat known as "quantum supremacy." That is, the search giant says it has successfully created a computer that's able to complete a calculation that is virtually impossible for traditional computers to perform. Google says Sycamore, its 53-qubit quantum computer, was able to calculate a proof in three minutes and 20 seconds that shows the numbers created by a random number generator are in fact random.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella rates quantum computing as one of three key technologies that will shape his company’s future, along with artificial intelligence and mixed reality. IBM has its Q initiative, and Boeing’s newly formed Disruptive Computing & Networks unit is targeting quantum as well.
However, IBM was responsible for developing Summit and the company says that thecould have done the work in two and a half days and possibly even faster if it was given more time to perfect the implementation. While this would still not make Summit faster than Sycamore, in his original definition of quantum supremacy, Preskill did say that a quantum computer would have to do something impossible for a classical computer to do, to reach the milestone.
Google is expected to publish a peer-reviewed version of its leaked quantum supremacy paper which will be based on its latest Sycamore chip. IBM's recently released paper has yet to be peer reviewed but the company says that it will be soon.

Microsoft's Quantum Development Kit supports Linux and macOS
The latest update also brings the interoperability with Python. Developers can now leverage existing Python libraries with the Quantum programming language Q #. The Quantum libraries in turn offers Microsoft under an open source license. MicrosoftMicrosoft has updated its Quantum Development Kit. New features include support for Mac OS X, Linux and other open source libraries, as well as interoperability with the Python programming language. According to Jeff Henshaw, Group Program Manager for Quantum Software at Microsoft, the update brings "the power of quantum computing to more developers on more platforms." The first version of the Quantum Development Kit was released by the Redmond company in December 2017. It includes the Quantum programming language Q # and allows integration with Visual Studio. Since then, thousands of developers have tested quantum development, Henshaw writes in an Support for the Mac platform and Linux was the most requested feature by developers. At the request of the community, Microsoft has also placed the Quantum libraries and patterns under an open source license. This allows developers to use them for their own applications as well as to make their own developments available to the community.
Interoperability with Python allows developers to leverage existing libraries without porting them to Q #. Q # code is now able to call Python routines directly - and vice versa. In addition, Microsoft promises a factor 4 to 5 higher performance of the Quantum simulator. Advantages should arise especially in simulations with 20 or more qubits.
Quantum Computing views Microsoft as the solution to many unsolvable problems today. In turn, the Quantum Development Kit will allow more developers and even students, professors, researchers, and even newcomers to create new Quantum applications. The opening for Linux also shows that Microsoft is increasingly relying on open source. In an interview with ZDNet Australia, Microsoft CTO Raghu Ramakrishnan explained the great interest in open source with its roots in academic research. Microsoft understands itself today as a kind of mediator between the research and the enterprise world.
An example of the importance of open source is Hadoop. Companies today are not only used to the use of open source, they even specifically asked for it. "We meet our customers where they are. If you want Linux, we give you Linux. If you want MySQL, well, then we give them MySQL. If you want NoSQL, you get NoSQL. That means you have to be a part of open source. "
Over the past few years, Microsoft has transformed itself from open source opponent to open source supporter. At the latest with the entry into the Linux Foundation in the year 2016 Microsoft exiled earlier statements like "Linux is a cancer" from its vocabulary. The rejection of open source called Ramakrishnan also as a dead end. Open Source is an ecosystem and in the truest sense of the word a community. If you want to seriously offer open source, like Microsoft, you have to be part of this community as well.
