Technology Brew excellent espresso at home with Nespresso Vertuo and 30 coffee pods for $100

There's a reason we typically go to a coffee shop when we're in the mood for espresso: The machine that makes it is big, loud, expensive and kinda scary. Thankfully, there's a consumer-friendly machine that's compact, not as loud and not the least bit scary. It's the Nespresso Vertuo, and although it can be fairly expensive, there's a great deal right now.

Today only, and while supplies last, Amazon has the Nespresso Vertuo with 30 coffee capsules for $99.99. Normally the Vertuo sells for $199 all by itself (though it's currently on sale from Nespresso proper for $139). The last time I shared this deal, Bloomingdale's was offering the machine with a milk frother -- but no coffee -- for the same price.

The Nespresso Vertuo makes regular coffee and espresso; it automatically detects what kind of pod you've inserted and brews accordingly. I've owned one for a couple years, and I absolutely love it -- with one reservation: The pods are pricey (about $1 each on average), and there are no third-party options for this particular machine. Maybe that's why it didn't make CNET's list of the best coffee makers -- but I'm here to tell you, it should have.

OK, I know: These pod-based coffee makers are terrible for the environment. Thankfully, Nespresso offers free recycling for your pods, which are collected in a side bin after brewing. Every time that bin fills up, dump the used pods into Nespresso's postage-prepaid recycling bag. The only catch is that to get one of those bags, you have to order some pods directly from Nespresso. (Which isn't a big deal, because although they're also available from Amazon, they're no cheaper.)

Fans of the Nespresso advertising saga, with George Clooney playing the playboy client, may have noticed that the recycling problem has been bothering him for several episodes. "George, we recycle! Like him, the brand's customers struggle to understand what they need to do with their Nespresso capsules and throw them in the trash with a bad conscience.

The embarrassment has long been shared by Nespresso. "For eight years, we have been encouraging customers to bring them to our points of sale," says Arnaud Deschamps, CEO of Nespresso France. Collection containers have been installed in communal waste centers. But it was not ideal. Because of the lack of plants capable of treating the capsules to recover the coffee grounds and aluminum, this treatment was carried out in Germany. And the collection, based on the goodwill of customers and the efficiency of parcel delivery networks, such as Mondial Relay, was often taken in default. A televised investigation in 2010 even accused Nestle's subsidiary of greenwashing.

150,000 euros per machine

The company then decides to create a sorting chain so that the French can deposit the capsules in their yellow bins. "I realized that it was possible to recover tons of unexploited metals, including our capsules, but also the aluminum foil of chocolate bars, yoghurt pots, and portioned cheeses, by equipping them with finer sieves. and electromagnets, "says Arnaud Deschamps. This is all small waste, forgotten sorting because too small to interest industries. But if the economic stake is not enormous, it is considerable for the image of Nespresso.

Both industrialists and local authorities accept the advice and, above all, the Nespresso funds that invest 150,000 euros per machine. Anxious to share experience and costs with others, the Nestlé subsidiary creates the Recycling Club for lightweight aluminum and steel packaging. Bel, Materne, La Boîte Boisson joined him. To date, seventeen factories are equipped covering 8 million French people involved, 10 million in 2018. According to Nespresso, which has already invested 15 million euros, 20% of its capsules are actually recycled in France. The approach is virtuous, but it is still too little.
