Chancellor Angela Merkel’s government and Germany ’s carmakers agreed to increase cash incentives for electric cars to as much as 6,000 euros (,676) per vehicle in an effort to lift The cash incentive for electric cars will rise to 6,000 euros and for plug-in hybrid vehicles to 4,500 euros.

Germany 's Chancellor is chairing a meeting Tuesday at which the government is expected to decide on new incentives for buyers of electric cars . Incentives would only be available for cars priced under 60,000 euros. Policy-makers are considering giving smaller cars a proportionately larger benefit.

Chancellor Angela Merkel’s government and Germany’s carmakers agreed to increase cash incentives for electric cars to as much as 6,000 euros ($6,676) per vehicle in an effort to lift demand.

“The switch to e-mobility has never been so attractive,” Helge Braun, Merkel’s chief of staff, wrote in a tweet after Monday evening’s meeting in Berlin between the Chancellery and officials from automakers, parts suppliers and labor unions.

BERLIN (Reuters) - Germany 's coalition parties plan to boost demand for electric cars by exempting them from vehicle tax, the Sueddeutsche Zeitung daily reported on Wednesday, citing German auto executives have long pushed the government to introduce incentives to lift demand for electric cars .

The Germans have little interest in electric cars - as evidenced by sluggish sales in the country. In a bid to boost weak demand , there are Even Transport Minister Alexander Dobrindt, a member of Seehofer's CSU party, has so far been against offering state incentives for stimulating e-car sales

The current incentive program will be expanded and extended. Under the plan, the auto industry will cover half the cost. The cash incentive for electric cars will rise to 6,000 euros and for plug-in hybrid vehicles to 4,500 euros. For cars costing more than 40,000 euros, the incentives will be 5,000 euros and 4,000 euros respectively.
