Overnight on Thursday, people across the country received previously unsent text messages that were originally meant to be shared on Valentine's Day. The problem appears to have affected both iPhone and Android users, and it was widespread across multiple carriers.

It's unclear why texts sent on Feb. 14 were intercepted. However, the reason people are just now receiving them is due to a routine system update on Nov. 6.

Some mobile carriers rely on a third-party text platform called Syniverse to relay messages. The vendor said in a statement that its IT staff unknowingly caused the texts to be delivered this week.

"During an internal maintenance cycle last night, 168,149 previously undelivered text messages were inadvertently sent to multiple mobile operators’ subscribers," Syniverse said in a statement.

“We apologize to anyone who was impacted by this occurrence,” said William Hurley, chief marketing and product officer at Syniverse. The company said the issue has since been resolved and it's working to make sure it doesn't happen again.

From Reddit to Twitter, people took to social media to express confusion over what happened.

Some said they received text messages from their ex. Others said the messages caused awkward conversations with people from their past.

"I was one of the people who got a text from February last night. Yes it was from someone I almost dated," writes @EmEffEff on Twitter. On Reddit, Kamakshi98 writes, "Got a text from my ex that said 'K', it was not fun waking up to that after 6 months of no contact."

One person tweeted at Sprint complaining that her phone sent a random text to her boss in the middle of the night.

Sprint responded saying the glitch was fixed.

"The issue was resolved not long after it occurred," Sprint said in a statement confirming that it affected "multiple carriers in the U.S."
