  Spotify’s free streaming will work with Alexa and Bose speakers You no longer need a Spotify Premium subscription to listen to your Spotify playlists on Alexa, Bose or Sonos speakers. Last week, Spotify announced that Free users could finally listen on Sonos speakers. Today, it's extending that capability to Alexa and Bose speakers, too. For the first time, Free users in the US, Australia and New Zealand will be able to play Today's Top Hits, Discover Weekly or custom playlists on Amazon Echo and Fire TV devices. Or, Free users can stream through the Bose Home Speaker 300, Home Speaker 450, Home Speaker 500, Portable Home Speaker, Soundbar 500 or Soundbar 700.

Those users were able to stream Spotify on Sonos speakers . But Spotify has 248 million monthly users, and more than half of those are on the Spotify Free plan. This is undoubtedly a pre-holiday push to make Sonos speakers more appealing to the millions of people who use Spotify Free .

Sonos speakers can now stream Spotify ’ s free music service. Spotify Free streams can be played through Sonos speakers directly from Spotify ( using Spotify Connect) or via the Sonos app if you prefer, just like Spotify ’ s ad- free Premium accounts that offer the luxury of unrestricted playback.

Early this year, Spotify past the 100 million Premium subscribers mark. Those users were able to stream Spotify on Sonos speakers. But Spotify has 248 million monthly users, and more than half of those are on the Spotify Free plan. Until now, Free users were unable to stream music on Sonos speakers. That changes today. Thanks to a software update, Spotify Free users can now listen on Sonos.

To take advantage of the change, make sure your Spotify app is updated. Under Settings, select Services and Add a Service under Music & Content. You'll have to stream through the Sonos or Spotify apps, or you can start a playlist with Google Assistant on voice-enabled devices. Alexa does not yet work with Spotify Free.

This is undoubtedly a pre-holiday push to make Sonos speakers more appealing to the millions of people who use Spotify Free. Given how many users stream for free, it's honestly surprising that Sonos did not support this before.

Sonos offers its early adopters a 30 percent discount on new speakers .
