New icons found in macOS suggest that 16-inch MacBook Pro release drawing near At this point, it's overwhelmingly clear that the butterfly keyboard design Apple introduced on its late-2016 MacBook Pro marks one of the low points in Apple design. Though Apple would go on to make iterative improvements to the design, the bottom line is that the slimmer keyboard design proved to be unreliable and prone to breaking if even the slightest particle happened to lodge itself underneath a key. The good news is that Apple is reportedly planning to launch a slew of new MacBook models with the older scissor mechanism keyboard, including a revamped  MacBook Pro with a 16-inch display.

Last week, Apple introduced the 16- inch MacBook Pro where they also brought a new “Magic Keyboard ” to Based on the teardown, this is essentially the same old scissor mechanism used in earlier The report claims that the new scissor keyboard will be introduced in the first half of 2020

The new 16- inch MacBook Pro features a redesigned scissor switch keyboard , largely based on the standalone Magic Keyboard for the iMac. Given the tried-and-tested design, the keyboard should prove far more reliable than the troublesome butterfly keyboards used across the MacBook lineup in

A new MacBook Pro 13-inch will arrive in the first half of 2020, and it will come bearing keyboard gifts – namely the same scissor switches used in the just-released MacBook Pro 16-inch, according to a fresh rumor.

This originates from a DigiTimes subscriber-only report, which was highlighted by Mac Rumors, and states that the next MacBook Pro 13-inch refresh will get the new redesigned keyboard, which makes sense – and has been indicated by previous rumors. But the new machine will also apparently stick with a 13.3-inch display.

The news on the screen might be a disappointment to some, as speculation has been floating around that the smaller version of Apple’s MacBook Pro could maintain more or less the same chassis size, but fit in a bigger 14-inch screen.

Apple might not release a MacBook Pro with an improved keyboard design until next year

Apple might not release a MacBook Pro with an improved keyboard design until next year If you've been patiently waiting for Apple to fix the butterfly keyboard design it introduced a few years back, you'll have to wait just a little bit longer. While we saw a few reports pointing towards Apple introducing a 16-inch MacBook Pro with a more reliable scissor-style keyboard design sometime this month, a new research note from Ming-Chi Kui (via MacRumors) relays that we won't see a new keyboard design until 2020. Kuo doesn't specifyKuo doesn’t specify which MacBook model will be the first to re-introduce the scissor switch keyboard, but it’s long been assumed that it would be rumored 16-inch MacBook Pro.

The report also states that the 13 - inch MacBook Pro will retail the 13.3-inch style of the current model. It’s worth noting that the 16-inch MacBook Renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has stated in the past that he expects Apple to completely switch over to scissor keyboards for its laptops by the end of 2020 .

Since the 16-inch MacBook Pro came out last week, I've been waiting to learn when we'll see that laptop's According to a new report from Taiwan's DigiTimes (found by MacRumors), Apple intends to release a new 13 - inch MacBook Pro with the scissor-switch key mechanisms in the first half of 2020 .

Mainly because that’s the trick Apple pulled with the new MacBook Pro 16-inch; the chassis isn’t much bigger than the old MacBook Pro 15-inch it replaces (thanks to thinner bezels around the new laptop’s display).

So DigiTimes contends this isn’t happening, but at this point, we obviously can’t take any speculation as confirmed (DigiTimes has proved right in the past, of course, but also wrong on other occasions – so this whole report needs to be treated with some caution).

Keyboard bliss?

It’s obviously good news that the improved keyboard should be on-board, which replaces the often complained about current effort that uses Butterfly switches. The new one employs scissor switches instead, and is modeled on the iMac’s Magic Keyboard – and will hopefully prove more reliable and less prone to being plagued by dust issues.

As we found in our hands-on with the MacBook Pro 16-inch, the overhauled keyboard is also much more comfortable to type on. Furthermore, it makes other changes like reintroducing an escape key top-left, and a Touch ID button, as well as having inverted-T arrow keys. The report doesn’t say if the incoming MacBook Pro 13-inch refresh will also get these changes.

The MacBook Pro 13-inch models were refreshed earlier this year, you may recall, and in July the entry-level version benefited from the introduction of a much more powerful 8th-gen Intel Core i5 quad-core processor, not to mention being graced with the Touch Bar (which was previously left off the base model) as well as Touch ID.

iFixit examines the 16-inch MacBook Pro's 'throwback' keyboard design .
From the time we spent with Apple's just-announced 16-inch MacBook Pro, it was obvious that the shallow, unreliable butterfly keyboard design was out and scissor switches were back in. (It didn't hurt that Apple has confirmed the changes on the new MacBook Pro's product page.) But naturally, the teardown team at iFixit was bound to get their hands on the 16-inch MacBook Pro and see exactly how its keyboard compares to ones that came before it. Well, they've just published their results -- and just as expected, the new keyboard is nearly identical to the one in the 2015 MacBook Pro as well as Apple's external Bluetooth Magic Keyboard.
