The Pixel 4's Recorder app can capture and transcribe simultaneously Google's Pixel 4 smartphone will come with a nifty new Recorder app that is sure to earn fans among journalists and students. In one of the more show-stealing parts of the company's fall hardware event, Google's Sabrina Ellis revealed she had been using the app throughout her presentation to record her part of the keynote. The app can both record and transcribe audio at the same time. Additionally, thanks to machine learning, it can identify specific words and sounds, allowing you to use the app's built-in search function to find specific parts of a transcript. Ellis later revealed that the entire demo was done with the Pixel 4 in airplane mode.

Over its last few Pixel cycles, Google has made a point of bringing some features of its most recent phone to other devices. This week, for instance, Pixel 4's live audio captioning tool expanded to Pixel 3 and 3a devices. Now, owners of older Pixel handsets can check out one of Pixel 4's niftier aspects: the Recorder app that can capture and transcribe audio simultaneously.

Google said last month it'd make Recorder available for older Pixels. On Thursday, it updated the app, which should now pop up in the Play Store for other supported Pixels, namely Pixel 2 and later devices. However, it doesn't seem to work on the original Pixel -- at least not officially.

Google’s auto-transcribing Recorder app will come to older Pixel devices

Google’s auto-transcribing Recorder app will come to older Pixel devices Following its debut on the Pixel 4Automatic transcription services are becoming increasingly common, but the advantage the Recorder app has is it does everything on device and works even when your phone is without an internet connection. It’s not perfect, and it can struggle with some stronger accents and particularly fast talkers. But for the most part, it’s fast, fairly accurate, and, most importantly, totally free.

As is the case with many other apps, it might run just fine on other Android devices. Some users have been sideloading the Recorder APK to their phones. The app crashed when some of them tried to launch it, though Android Police suggests the update might have resolved the issue.

Some big Pixel 4 features are now on older devicesFrankly, there are a lot of recording apps to choose from in the Google Play Store, and if you’re just looking to record audio, many of them will suit. What sets Google’s Recorder app apart is its ability to automatically transcribe voices (English only, for now), even without an internet connection. Google also claims that the app is able to label your recording based on what it hears. In other words, it can tell the difference between the spoken word and, say, a recorded jam session in the studio.
