CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The first year of Cleveland’s Blockland Solutions conference explained the hype around blockchain. Now organizers hope the second year will provide practical opportunities for true adopters.

“You go through the trough of disillusionment, that happens with every new technology,” Bernie Moreno, founder of Northeast Ohio’s blockchain movement, Blockland, said. “There’s a lot of ‘this is going to change the world,’ and then ‘oh, it didn’t change the world.'”

It’s the people who stick around after the hype has died down who do the real work of incorporating new technologies into their companies, Moreno said.

This year’s conference, which begins Monday, isn’t seeing a projected dip in the attendance numbers -- about 1,500 people are registered to attend. Last year, the conference sold out by the first day, with a total of over 1,700 people packing the Huntington Convention Center downtown.

Like last year, the conference is funded through a combination of public and private funding. The city of Cleveland approved $50,000, and the county put $100,000 towards it. The Cleveland Foundation and JumpStart also contributed. Moreno said there is $1.1 million in private investment.

There are some differences from last year. Pre-conference coding training sessions were moved to earlier in November, because organizers didn’t want them to interfere with a late Thanksgiving. There are fewer sessions demonstrating what blockchain is and why it’s relevant and more on how companies can use it.

Moreno said even when he’s talking to potential customers about his new blockchain company, Ownum, he focuses more on what the technology can do, not what it is.

Also new this year: a dedicated day to cybersecurity. Blockland Solutions absorbed McPc’s BusinessTECH conference, which had been held around the same time. So sessions will focus on how companies can use new solutions to protect their digital assets.

Among conference highlights is a fireside chat with Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian, hosted by KeyBank Chief Information Officer Amy Brady.

Other topics include how the government is regulating digital assets and blockchain, redefining business of tomorrow with blockchain and the outlook on cyber security talent.

Twitch Hype Train rewards hot donation streaks with free emotes .
Hang around a large-enough Twitch channel and you'll eventually see a sub or bit train -- a moment where the hype kicks off and the streamer ends up with a mountain of donations. Twitch wants to seize on those sprees. It's launching a Hype Train feature this week that hands out free emotes to donators when they fill up an on-screen meter. A train starts when enough subscriptions or bit cheers occur in a certain amount of time (streamers can choose a threshold). After that, any subs or 100-plus bit cheers contribute to the meter. There are five levels of emotes with five levels each, so you'll have an incentive to keep frenzies going for a while.
