Technology CES: Smart toothbrushes go from concept to reality as industry giants embrace more tech
Google partners with publishers to bring audio news feeds to the Assistant
The search giant will use its algorithms to tell you the news. For the tool, called Your News Update, Google partnered with several publishers, including The Washington Post, CNN, Fox News, and CBS Local (a sister property of CNET). To use the new feature, people can ask their Google Home smart speakers or phones to "play me the news." Google's software will then play a mix of stories for the listener, like an international news story or a sports update. Before each story, the Assistant will tell you the name of the news outlet that wrote the story that will be playing next.
LAS VEGAS — When we, we rolled our eyes and wondered aloud if we really needed such an expensive toothbrush with an app to monitor brushing habits.
Fast-forward to CES 2020, and what was once a concept from small hardware startups is now being promoted by the biggest players in toothbrushes. Colgate and Oral-B are both here at CES launching new smart toothbrushes: the Colgate Plaqless Pro and the Oral-B iO.
claims to have a first-of-its-kind optical sensor technology that detects biofilm buildup in the mouth and provides real-time coaching via the Colgate Connect App.
The next OnePlus phone may be a device unlike anything else in the industry
OnePlus teased an unexpected press conference a few days ago, saying that it will unveil a brand new product at CES 2020. At the time, I wondered whether the company would reveal one of the OnePlus 8 phones that has appeared in several rumors already, or perhaps a different product category altogether. After all, OnePlus is making TVs now, a move that suggests the Chinese smartphone vendor might explore other product categories in the future. AtAt the same time, we know that smartphones remain the company’s bread-and-butter. It turns out that OnePlus will indeed showcase a phone at CES 2020, and it will be a device unlike anything else in the industry.
Not to be outdone, offers a smart pressure sensor to identify and guide users to brush in the optimal pressure range and a smart display that offers coaching and motivation during your brushing session. The Oral-B iO App claims to use artificial intelligence analysis of thousands of recorded brushing sessions to craft its brushing recommendations.
Pricing for both toothbrushes has yet to be determined, but a representative from Colgate indicated that the Plaqless Pro will likely be in the $250-to-$300 range.
There is even a toothbrush on display that uses radio frequency vibrations to loosen and remove plaque and tartar. The $300isn’t available in the U.S. yet, but it claims to be the only toothbrush that can remove stubborn impurities attached to your teeth.
Electric toothbrushes are popular and admittedly I am a fan of my own Sonicare toothbrush, but whether app-based toothbrush coaching will ever take off is certainly debatable. As a reminder, somewhere around $3 does get you a regular toothbrush that can be quite effective to maintain dental hygiene.
