Google, Airbnb, Facebook ... The dreams of generation Z
Fewer and fewer prep students dream of working in a multinational after their training. They are also less likely to want to enter a business to "make a career there".
I don't love you either ... Between young graduates and big companies, disillusionment takes hold. It even takes worrying proportions according to two studies released back to back this week. Thus, just over a third, only preparatory students dream of working in a multinational at the end of their training compared to half two years ago, according to the survey of the NewGen Talent Center at Edhec , published on June 21, which interviewed 2,930 pupils in preparatory classes for business schools. Likewise, the 14th edition of the Observatoire des Grandes Ecoles, published by the HR consulting company Gallileo on June 22, shows that the ambition to enter a company to "make a career there" is no longer an objective. that motivates future executives.
"Six out of 10 young graduates are looking for a 2-3 year position as a priority, able to enhance their profile to gain faster access to key positions in another company," note its authors, who surveyed 1,900 students from the 20 best schools. engineer and management in France. In equivalent proportions, they also want a versatile job with diversified tasks and an international career. Even more spectacular, in 4 years, the category of “ambitious” students, those who aim for high remuneration in a prestigious company, has become a minority (40% against 60% in 2012) at the expense of “enthusiasts”, ready to make concessions to work in the sector of their dream and "hedonists", who favor personal development."Feeding with Google, Airbnb and Facebook"
Thus, companies, whose main functions are organized in silos and often highly hierarchical, find it increasingly difficult to retain Generation Z, those born in the 90s. " We have lots of Centraliens, Sciences Po and HEC who leave their employer six to eight months after being hired, ”says Manuelle Malot, Director of Career and Prospective at EDHEC. Among the main criticisms expressed by these well-made heads, but which do not hold up: the lack of feedback from the hierarchy, overly standardized positions or the slowness of decision-making.
A young graduate is very sorry to have spent 6 months on the new typography of P de Poulain, the chocolate brand of the American group Mondelez (ex Kraft Foods). "For this generation steeped in the culture of zapping and immediacy, whose curriculum allows them to be fairly touch with everything, this is a problem", explains Quentin Ballu, director of the HR and Marketing department of Gallileo, in charge of the Observatory. "They were fed up with Google, Airbnb and Facebook, which succeeded very quickly, and that makes them dream", adds Manuelle Malot. Thus, according to figures from the NewGen Talent Center at Edhec, the proportion of those who aspire to work in a start-up or an SME has simply doubled in two years, to reach 29%!
These profiles of young graduates force large groups to undergo radical reform. The pyramidal hierarchies must be compressed as much as possible to favor local management. "We must offer them cross-functional programs on different functions," says Quentin Ballu, while Manuelle Malot advocates "entrepreneurial" work with mentoring support. ". Both warn of promises that do not always match the values of the company. The disappointment is all the stronger. And early separation.
