Apple preparing to build the ‘next generation of media apps for Windows’
Apple looking for UWP developers, tooApple maintains existing Windows apps like iTunes and iCloud, but these are both old traditional desktop apps that are showing their age. Apple revealed earlier this year that it’s breaking up iTunes into three separate macOS apps: Podcasts, TV, and Music. None of these apps have arrived on Windows, leaving PC users with just iTunes. If you’re an Apple Music or Apple TV Plus subscriber, you have to use the web versions instead of dedicated apps on Windows 10 right now.

To calculate these statistics, Gartner took into account the sales of desk-based PCs, notebook PCs and ultramobile premiums (excluding Chromebooks and iPads), and IDC made its calculations based on desktop, notebook, and workstation sales. Global shipments measured in at approximately 70.6 million units and 71.8 million units, respectively.
Apple commits to making new media apps for Windows
It seems that Apple is finally turning its attention to its Windows users. A new Apple job listing reveals that the company is hiring software engineers to build "the next generation of media apps for Windows," with the blurb suggesting the company could be looking to introduce Windows apps akin to those already offered on Mac. When Apple got rid of the iTunes app in macOS Catalina it was swiftly replaced with new dedicated apps for music, podcasts and TV. The iTunes for Windows app didn't get the same treatment, with folks on Windows 10 having to rely on Apple TV+ and Apple Music via the web, which doesn't really make for great UX.

Both firms reported that products by Lenovo, HP Inc., and Dell Technologies made up about 65% of the total sales over 2019, followed then by Apple.
Considering that most commercial upgrades from Windows 7 to Windows 10 will be concluded by the end of the month, Gartner and IDC both predict global sales to steadily decline again over 2020. However, the introduction of new products, like notebooks with folding displays, in the PC segment are expected support market growth.

2019 was the first good year for the PC industry in a long while, according to both Gartner and IDC. It's the first time in seven years that the global PC market has experienced growth for the full year, Gartner says. IDC reported a similar finding, specifying that 2019's results show the first full year of PC growth since the market grew by 1.7 percent way back in 2011. Shipments for traditional PC devices, including desktops, notebooks and workstations, grew 2.7 percent year over year, according to IDC. Gartner's numbers only showed a 0.6 percent growth for the whole year, but both research firms put the total number of PC shipments in Q4 2019 at over 70 million units.
