Technology Amazon Echo Show now scans barcodes for your grocery list
Amazon unveils a portable battery-powered Echo
Amazon hasn't built a portable Echo device since the little-loved Tap, but that situation has now changed. The retail giant has unveiled the Echo Input (Portable Smart Speaker Edition) exclusively for the Indian market. It has 360-degree sound and comes with a 4800mAh battery that powers it for 10 hours of continuous music playback and 11 hours of standby life. Unlike the dongle-like Echo Input, this model doesn't let you use Alexa with a dumb speaker. Rather, Amazon sees it as a way to bring Alexa with you. "Portability has been one of the most requested features in India," Amazon devices VP Miriam Daniel told TechCrunch.
Amazon hasa feature for newer Echo Show that lets you add items to Alexa's built-in shopping list by scanning their barcodes. Sure, it's pretty easy to add stuff to your grocery list with Alexa's help: All the assistant needs is a voice command. But there may be times when you have to add something very specific that could be difficult to dictate, or times when you want to be 100 percent sure you're picking the right product for someone in your household.
According to VentureBeat, the feature is available forand smart speakers with displays. To start the process, just say "Alexa, scan this to my shopping list," and instructions will show up, asking you to align the product barcode with its digital counterpart on the screen. It worked well most of the time when tested it out, though it added a lengthy product description for a carton of milk instead of just the brand and the item type. Hey, at least you'll be 100 percent sure that you're picking the right gluten-, soy-, lactose- and sugar-free food item for that family member who's allergic to everything.
