Crisis hospitals have been set up in Greenock and East London, with Manchester Arena and the NEC in Birmingham also in line to be used as medical centres during the coronavirus crisis .

The Detroit District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is assessing over a dozen sites around metro Detroit, Lansing and Grand Rapids that may be used as field hospitals amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the corps announced. 

The 15 locations assessed by the Army Corps of Engineers were proposed by the State of Michigan, the corps said. 

“The State of Michigan has asked (the Federal Emergency Management Agency) for assistance in responding to a critical shortage in hospital space due to the spread of this virus," Lt. Col. Gregory Turner, Detroit District commander, said in a press release. "We're going to bring the full resources of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and our engineering expertise to bear against this problem. That's our mission: to engineer solutions to the nation's toughest challenges."

Among the proposed locations are the 725,000-square-foot TCF Center, Detroit Pistons Performance Center and two dormitories at Wayne State University. Those proposed locations are all in Detroit.

At Henry Ford Health System, 304 people were hospitalized with COVID-19 and another 107 people were admitted and waiting for test results as of Wednesday afternoon at its five hospitals in Detroit, West Bloomfield, Clinton Township, Wyandotte and Jackson.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has over 15,500 personnel engaged across the nation, it said in a statement. 

It has received six FEMA Mission Assignments, totaling $361 million, some $5.6 million of which are to provide initial planning and engineering support to address medical facility shortages.
