© Provided by Dr. Windows After Mozilla's last year was mainly characterized by the pandemic and the layoffs caused by it, 2021 is now the first year in which the organization has to prove itself in a significantly reduced form. Last year, the developers were able to complete numerous projects such as the rollout of Fenix as a new Android browser or the warp update of the JavaScript engine SpiderMonkey, while numerous other projects outside of Firefox were discontinued or relocated.

Now one of the larger projects is to come with a new design for the browser in 2021, as Sören Hentzschel on his blog reported. The design developed under the name Proton could reach users in around four and a half months if Firefox 89.0 is to be released on May 18, 2021. That would be an extremely short period of time between the first mention and the final release, with the predecessors Photon and Australis it took up to a year each until the changes were all in the stable version.
Meanwhile, there are also the first mockups that are currently not yet publicly accessible. In addition to a visual renewal, Proton should also bring changes to the user experience, some of which we already know from other browsers such as Edge and Vivaldi. Possible improvements include vertical tabs as well as tab environments that can be nested as in Vivaldi - quasi a native integration of the Tree Style Tab add-on.
