Lack of cyber funds in Biden infrastructure plan raises eyebrows

Lack of cyber funds in Biden infrastructure plan raises eyebrows President Biden's $2.25 trillion infrastructure plan does not include any funds to protect critical infrastructure against cyberattacks, even as the threat grows against targets like the electric grid.Experts say it was disappointing to see there were no funds set aside to defend systems critical to everyday life from hackers, particularly as the proposal calls for things like $100 billion for improving grid resiliency, the creation of new jobs, and developing more clean electricity.

Networks BW has equipped in a field attempt an underground car park with 58 charging points, where 45 electric cars regularly stocked electricity for 16 months. Thus, the network operator wanted to investigate whether the electricity grid will withstand the additional load by electric cars.

The street picture changes. More and more electric cars and plugin hybrids drive on the streets and parking in the entrance. Promotion when buying a car, the tax benefits for company car drivers and government support when buying a wallbox also inspire the sales figures of electrified cars.

With the registration numbers, the power requirement increases and the question arises as to whether the local power grids and equipment in multi-family houses and underground garages are designed for electricity requirements of the E cars.

The shift to electric vehicles must now prioritize charging stations

The shift to electric vehicles must now prioritize charging stations We need an aggressive build-out of a nationwide charging infrastructure that is so pervasive that any EV owner — no matter where they live and no matter their driving routes and patterns — will be able to conveniently charge up. With automakers planning to introduce more than 70 EV nameplates over the next seven years, we are fast approaching an inflection point at which it may make more sense to shift from incentivizing the purchase of EVS to the development of commercial and public charging infrastructure.

58 charging points and 45 electric cars in an underground car park

The network operator Networks BW examined this in a 16-month field trial in the municipality Tamm at Ludwigsburg. There, the underground car park of a residential complex was equipped with 58 AC charging points. The residents were provided with 45 electric cars loan.

About the test period, each of the cars laid an average of 1,100 kilometers a month. The attempt has shown that in the underground car park never more than 13 charging operations took place in parallel. A threatening overload of the power grid was therefore given at any time. For load tips, an intelligent charging management system lowered the connection power in the system. Some electric car drivers had to accept longer loading times. According to networks BW, however, nine of ten participants did not feel limited by the extension in any way.

Many prominent environmental groups have hailed Biden’s proposed clean electricity standard, the centerpiece of his plan to eliminate all planet-warming emissions from the power sector by 2035, as the most aggressive initiative to shut down dirty power plants in American history.
