Google knows where you are 24/7. Here's how to make it stop

Google knows where you are 24/7. Here's how to make it stop If you use Google, your location and other sensitive or private information is automatically shared. Here's how to change this hidden default setting.Turning off location history only removes where you've been from the Google Maps Timeline feature, which logs your location with certain data at a specific time. Google's support page on the matter is confusing. It says that even when turned off, "some location data may continue to be saved in other settings," like your web and app activity. (We reached out to Google for more information and will update this story when we hear back.) But if you take a few more steps, you can stop Google from knowing where you are 24/7.

Google will invest a billion euros in the construction of two new data centers in Hanau and in the Greater Berlin in the coming years.

The cloud facility in Hanau was only 20 kilometers from the world's largest internet node de-cix, said Philipp Justus, Google's Central Europe boss. The four-storey building with a useful space of around 10,000 square meters will be fully operational in the coming year. Google suits the Frankfurter Cloud region to the growing demand for cloud services in Germany. In parallel, Google will set up a new Cloud Region Berlin-Brandenburg. The exact location of the server was not communicated.

The various cloud regions serve mainly the purpose of spatially closer to the clientele with their own services. This significantly reduces data run times (latency) compared to a trans-Atlantic data connection. For customers, however, there are also legal and regulatory reasons to work better on cloud computers that are in Germany instead of using in the US.

A significant part of Google investment flows into the production of renewable energy in Germany, because the data centers are also huge electricity consumers. Since 2017, Google already balances its worldwide annual power consumption by purchasing eco-electricity. Google announced that the local energy partners Engie Germany from Cologne will feed more than 140 megawatts (MW) to solar and wind energy in the German network in the coming years. This included a new 39-MW photovoltaic system and the preservation of 22 wind farms. This will ensure that "from 2022 at each hour around 80 percent of the energy supplied to the Google infrastructure comes from CO2-free sources". dpa
