Cape Verde, eyeing economic recovery, votes for new president

Cape Verde, eyeing economic recovery, votes for new president Cape Verde, eyeing economic recovery, votes for new presidentPRAIA (Reuters) - The West African archipelago nation of Cape Verde, one of the continent's most stable democracies, voted on Sunday for a new president who will be tasked with righting its tourism-driven economy after the COVID-19 pandemic sent growth cratering.

Cape Verde has a semi-parliamentary regime, sponsoring the Prime Minister, the Government and Parliament. The President plays a role of referee.

Mr Neves, Head of the Government of 2001 to 2016, has already experienced such cohabitation in reversed roles between 2011 and 2016 with the outgoing President and a member of MPD Jorge Carlos Fonseca.

Since the introduction of multiparty politics in 1990, 15 years after independence vis-à-vis Portugal, the PAICV and the MPD have shared power and have practiced a smooth alternation quoted as an example by the defenders of a Democracy on the recoil elsewhere in West Africa. The presidential campaign took place again without noticeable incident.

The Cape Verdeans of the dozen islands composing the archipelago in the Atlantic off Senegal and the important diaspora "gave a good example of civicism," said Neves.

Mr Neves, 61, won with 51.7% of the votes, ahead of largely Carlos Veiga, MPD, according to provisional results published on an official website. Mr. Veiga has collected 42.4%.

The third of the seven competitors, all men, got 1.8% of the votes.

The long exercise of Mr. Neves as Prime Minister was marked by the establishment of relations with China, the signing of a special partnership with the European Union in 2007 and the presentation in 2008 of a predominantly female government. It has also been characterized by important infrastructure work, international airports, dams and roads.
