UCF announced Tuesday it has hired Heupel to replace Scott Frost, who left to take over at his alma mater, Nebraska, after leading the Knights to a 12-0 record this year.

Heupel is a former Oklahoma quarterback who was the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy in 2000. He led the Sooners to a national title win over Florida State in the Orange Bowl. He has been the offensive coordinator at Missouri since 2015.

Missouri's QB Drew Lock set the SEC record for touchdown passes in a season this year with 43 under Heupel's tutelage.

Frost took a good portion of his staff with him to Nebraska, so UCF will have to start over almost from scratch. Only one coach from Frost's staff is even on the recruiting trail in tight ends and recruiting coordinator Sean Beckton.

Central Florida also explored several other big names in its search including former Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin. The team reportedly offered Sumlin the job Sunday, but he was apparently holding out to see if the Oregon job would come open if coach Willie Taggart decided to take the Florida State job.
