Colson will have surgery Thursday to repair the injury, which he suffered in practice this week.

"We are all feeling for Bonzie right now, who was performing as well as any player in the country," coach Mike Brey said in a prepared statement. "We need to embrace this challenge. This program has lost key guys before and we figured out a way to earn an NCAA bid."

Colson was widely considered Player of the Year candidate prior to the season. He was leading the Fighting Irish in scoring (21.4 points per game) and rebounding (10.4 per game) prior to the injury.

Notre Dame (11-3, 1-0 ACC) opened conference play Dec. 30 with a win over Georgia Tech. It will face N.C. State at home Wednesday.

University of Notre Dame football coach Brian Kelly has dismissed four players from the team. Per a report from Pete Sampson of Irish Illustrated, sophomore receiver Kevin Stepherson, fresman running back C.J. Holmes, sophomore running back Deon McIntosh and junior nose guard Brandon Tiassum have all been given their walking papers.Tiassum’s dismissal can be categorized as surprising. He didn’t log much playing time for the team in 2017, but hadn’t had any known disciplinary issues. None of the other three dismissals, however, can be called surprising.Stepherson has had numerous issues with the law.
