Georgia's Kirby Smart took one big lesson from Nick Saban: Don't be Alabama, be better

Georgia's Kirby Smart took one big lesson from Nick Saban: Don't be Alabama, be better Alabama coach Nick Saban passed along some timely advice when Kirby Smart took the Georgia job after a national championship run in 2015. "I told Kirby this when he left," Saban said before a pause during Sunday's joint press conference at the Atlanta Sheraton Hotel. "Be your own man, be yourself. Do it the way you think it ought to be done. Don't try to be somebody else." MORE: Five numbers that will decide the national title gameMaybe it's time everybody else does, too.

The Saban Way. Programs looking to replicate Nick Saban ' s process have been eager to turn his Recruiting . For all of Dantonio’s tenure, the Spartans have excelled at unearthing gems such as Dooley landed offensive tackle Ja’Wuan James in his first recruiting class and another tackle

All those top-ranked recruiting classes should render a team immune to rotten injury luck, but Alabama’s linebacker depth chart following a season-opening 24–7 win against Florida State suggested otherwise. He knew the Tide’s roster intimately, and he knew all of Saban ’ s tendencies.

With Alabama's stunning 26-23 overtime win against Georgia in the national championship game Monday, Nick Saban separated himself even more from his peers.

It was the Crimson Tide's fifth title under Saban and his sixth overall, tying Bear Bryant for the most in the poll era. He also remains undefeated at 12-0 against former assistant coaches by beating Kirby Smart's Bulldogs.

But one of the most impressive stats is that now all of Saban's SEC recruiting classes have won at least one national championship at some point. (However, one year it was not while he was the coach.)

Can Kirby Smart break the Nick Saban assistant curse?

Can Kirby Smart break the Nick Saban assistant curse? As far as curses go in sports, being an assistant to Nick Saban may not be the most famed, but none will be more relevant this week when Saban's Alabama Crimson Tide meets the Kirby Smart led-Georgia Bulldogs in Monday's CFP National Championship. It's no surprise a number of assistants have emerged from Saban's staff to carve out roles for themselves as head coaches, but the peculiar thing is, not a single pupil has managed to beat the master. In eleven meetings with their former boss, Saban's assistants have swung and missed each and every time.

Nick Saban ' s Crimson Tide are mauling everything in their path. Sports books won 't even take bets on Bama's early-season nonconference games All of this will lead to two predictable outcomes: the Tide winning another national championship and Saban angrily denouncing newspapers for reporting that

Prior to the national championship game, many people thought Smart might have an advantage coaching against Saban because the pair only stopped working together in 2015. However, Smart pointed out that how Saban works during games is not where he bests everyone else.

Smart explained:

"You know, his tendencies and his strengths are recruiting really good players that are really big and really fast, and then you have to block them, okay, or you have to be able to run the ball against them or you have to be able to defend the wide-outs and the corner…"

Justin Thomas expertly trolled Skip Bayless and Danny Kanell during Alabama's CFP win

Justin Thomas expertly trolled Skip Bayless and Danny Kanell during Alabama's CFP win Turns out Thomas is as cold-blooded on the keyboard as he's inside the ropes. You might know Justin Thomas as a golfer, but the man identifies himself foremost as an Alabama fan. He takes his Crimson Tide football to heart, a sentiment which has backfired in the past. But during Monday night's National Championship, Thomas used his passion to put two trolls in their place.

Also, Saban ' s teams have played at least six games against ranked opponents in each of those championship years. Saban has won three of the past four SEC championships and is 6- 1 in his seven SEC title game appearances. Feeling a draft: Most first -round picks since 2007.

Saban is 6– 1 in SEC championship games, including two wins at LSU where he shared the 2003 national championship. Bryant, who also served as Alabama’ s athletic director during his time in Tuscaloosa, never could be accused of ambitious scheduling. During the Bear’ s six national title

If Saban was already a stellar recruiter, being able to point to this incredible stat would make it difficult for any prospect to turn his program down.

Here is a look back at some of Saban's championship winning teams.

Report: QB Wilton Speight could return to Michigan .
We may have to pump our brakes on a Wilton Speight transfer. Speight announced in late November that he was planning to leave Michigan as a graduate transfer. Not long thereafter it was reported that former Ole Miss QB Shea Patterson was transferring to Michigan. Though Patterson has already enrolled at Michigan, Speight is considering a return to the Wolverines.
