Losing to the Saints was a rough way to end the season for the Panthers and their franchise quarterback, Cam Newton.

In addition to getting no help from his wide receivers, Newton got pummeled in the backfield repeatedly, sacked four times, poked in the eye and kicked in the head. Apparently, he also suffered a knee injury which is only now coming to light.

According to a report by Adam Schefter at ESPN, the NFL's investigation into whether or not Carolina followed the concussion protocol when Newton was staggered by a hit late in the game will consider a knee injury as a factor, as well.

A league source told ESPN that the bothersome knee injury was a contributing factor as to why Newton staggered to the ground and struggled to stay balanced once he took a knee after a hard hit to the head. . . Newton underwent an MRI for the knee injury Monday, which came back negative. A source told ESPN that Newton would have been ready to play had the Panthers advanced to this weekend's NFC divisional playoff game.

While it's good that the knee issue sounds minor, it's just one more item to add to the long list of injuries Newton has suffered as the Panthers quarterback.

NFL determines Panthers properly evaluated Newton for concussion .
The NFL and NFLPA determined after an investigation that the Carolina Panthers properly followed concussion protocol in regards to quarterback Cam Newton during the wild-card round loss to the New Orleans Saints, the league announced. The Panthers will not face discipline from the league.
