On Monday night, he became the first quarterback this century to lead his team to the national title game in each of his first two seasons. In Alabama’s 24–6 win over Clemson, the reigning champion, Hurts completed 66% of his passes for 120 yards, committing not a single turnover—and yet somehow, as always, he seemed an afterthought.

Fresh off leading his Alabama Crimson Tide to a national championship, Brian Daboll is making his way back to the NFL.

The Buffalo Bills announced on Sunday that they have hired Daboll to be their offensive coordinator, replacing the recently fired Rick Dennison.

Daboll may be best known for calling a tremendous game in a comeback win over Georgia in last week’s national title. But he has much more experience at the NFL level.

The 42-year-old most recently served as the New England Patriots’ tight ends coach from 2014-16. Prior to that, he had stints in Kansas City, Miami and Cleveland as offensive coordinator. His last stint — with the Chiefs back in 2012 — resulted in a dead last ranking in points scored.

With a defensive-minded head coach in Sean McDermott running things in Buffalo, we can expect Daboll to be the primary play-caller moving forward. Whether that will lead to more success than earlier in his NFL career remains to be seen.

Bobby Petrino confirmed the news during an interview on Howie Lindsey’s “Louisville First” show on 790-KRD Monday morning. VanGorder, 58, spent the past season as an assistant at Oklahoma State. He was the defensive coordinator at Notre Dame in 2015, but was fired by head coach Brian Kelly just four games into the 2016 season.
