Rockets fend off Celtics to win 15th straight

Rockets fend off Celtics to win 15th straight The Rockets were in trouble, even if they didn't know it or at least would not admit it. But the Boston Celtics were another bucket from control, the winning streak another two minutes from being over.It was the best thing that could have happened to the Rockets.Of all the ways the Rockets had prevailed throughout the winning streak, from high-scoring blowouts to tight grinds with short-handed lineups, never had they faced the test or even the sense of import that hit them when they were down to their last chances Saturday night at Toyota Center.

Kyrie Irving is dealing with a sore knee, so the Boston Celtics point guard is prioritizing his long-term outlook over a couple games this week.

After exiting Boston’s 99-97 loss to the Indiana Pacers on Sunday, Irving said the left knee discomfort began March 3 against the Houston Rockets and it’s time to focus on getting healthy, per ESPN’s Chris Forsberg.

“I think [rest] will probably be the best thing, just instead of kind of hoping it gets better over the two or three days that it usually does. It’s aching a little bit more than I wanted it to now, so I’m taking the necessary time.”

Irving returns to carry Celtics past Timberwolves 117-109

Irving returns to carry Celtics past Timberwolves 117-109 Kyrie Irving returned from a one-game absence to help Boston fend off Minnesota, finishing with 23 points, seven rebounds and eight assists to pace the Celtics in a 117-109 victory over the Timberwolves on Thursday night. Al Horford added 20 points, eight rebounds, six assists and tough defense on Karl-Anthony Towns for the Celtics, who stayed two games behind Toronto in the Eastern Conference race with their sixth win in seven games. They have three more losses than the Raptors.Nemanja Bjelica scored a career-high 30 points on 11-for-16 shooting, including 6 for 9 from 3-point range.

Irving only played 16 minutes Sunday, and he missed a road contest against the Chicago Bulls six days earlier. Now, the Celtics will likely be without him opposite the Washington Wizards and Orlando Magic, perhaps longer.

This is the prudent choice for both Irving and the team, since Boston holds a seven-game advantage on the third-place Indiana Pacers. The magic number for the Celtics to clinch no worse than the No. 2 seed is just nine — with 15 games remaining.

Boston needs Irving completely healthy for the postseason. There’s little reason to have Irving playing through pain when the risk outweighs the reward.
