The Cardinals signed him to a contract extension in the summer of 2016, even though Mathieu had not yet returned from the second ACL injury. RELATED: Cardinals fans sound off on Tyrann Mathieu 's release .

The Arizona Cardinals are making a big move as the new league year approaches. The team is set to release defensive back Tyrann Mathieu after he refused to take a pay cut. Mathieu signed a five year deal in August 2016 that was worth up to .5 million.

The pool of free agent defensive backs has suddenly gotten a bit deeper, as the Arizona Cardinals have surprisingly decided to move on from Tyrann Mathieu.

Jay Glazer of FOX Sports reports that the Cardinals informed Mathieu on Wednesday that he is being released.

The team later confirmed the news.

Mathieu signed a five-year, $62.5 million extension with Arizona before the 2016 season, and he started all 16 games last year despite suffering a torn ACL at the end of the year in 2016. He’s still just 25 and is seen as one of the most versatile defensive backs in the game, so he should draw plenty of interest on the free agent market.

The Cardinals had tried to get Mathieu to restructure his deal and take a pay cut, but that is something he was not interested in doing.

Seven hyped NFL teams that could crash and burn in 2018 .
This time in the NFL is all about teams enhancing their rosters through both free agency and the upcoming draft. It is also time that teams tend to check in on some players recovering from injuries who are expected to play in 2018. This flurry of activity can’t help but get fans hyped for their favorite teams to play this year. But let’s all calm down a little. Will last year’s huge batch of injured players making their return instantly turn their struggling franchises around? At the same time, some teams are putting a lot of faith in newly-signed free agents making a huge impact this year.
