(Dave McDermand/College Station Eagle via AP) COLLEGE STATION – Jimbo Fisher has spoken at length about how much he looks forward to coaching at venerable Kyle Field, but when he finally took his team on the grass of Texas A&M's football home of more than 100 years, he might as well have been at Navasota High.

Turns out, he said he never really glanced past the white paint forming a rectangle 100 yards long and 53 1/3 yards wide. So, Jimbo, what was it like finally coaching a scrimmage at Kyle Field?

"Any time I get to coach anywhere, it's fun," he said. "You love being out there."

Then he paused at the realization.

"But I was probably too businesslike, I was probably too locked in, to realize I was at Kyle Field," he admitted recently. "I was too busy looking at what had to get done."

Fisher, hired from Florida State in December to replace the fired Kevin Sumlin, has a list seemingly 100 yards long of what he believes he needs to get done, and the changes are plenty along the railroad tracks on the west side of campus. Fisher, 52, and Sumlin, 53, are about the same age, but that's where the similarities end in their respective approaches to coaching the Aggies.

"Coach Fisher, he's tough, man," A&M senior defensive tackle Kingsley Keke said. "He's going to try and get it out of you – to try to make you the best player you can be. Practices are harder, and he's a really good teacher of the game. It's been a big difference."

Here's the latest on the hottest coaching rumor in college football.

How much is Jimbo Fisher ’s buyout due to FSU now that he has left Florida State for Texas A & M ? From our earlier story With the Florida State Seminoles’ Because Jimbo Fisher just a signed a contract extension with a buyout of roughly M .

A&M chancellor John Sharp describes Fisher in one key word: Intense.

Sumlin once had a reputation as a tough coach – when he was at the University of Houston and working his way up the coaching ladder. Over his six seasons at A&M, the Aggies developed a habit of starting seasons strong but fizzling by November.

In other words, Sumlin typically had the fellows fresh and ready in the fall, but they weren't built for the long haul. That's where Fisher comes in. He led FSU to the 2013 national title, and is regarded in the business as a perfectionist and a grinder.

Which way is best? A&M fans will find out starting this fall, although shifts in a program's culture don't occur overnight, or often even in an offseason. Sumlin, Arizona's new coach and a good fit for the more finesse Pac-12, had a decent record with the Aggies (51-26), with nearly twice as many victories as losses.

But outside of his first season (11-2, and a third place finish in the SEC West), he was never in the race for an SEC West crown when it truly counted.

One of the big changes in the program is noticeable to anyone who drives along Wellborn Road or George Bush Drive during the Aggies' practices. Under Sumlin, passers-by heard music blaring from giant speakers – speakers now attracting cobwebs while tucked away under the Kyle Field stands.

Sumlin believed music helped the players' energy during practice. Fisher has a different approach, and now the only sounds emitting from the Coolidge practice fields are whistles and loads of direction and demands.

"How in the heck can they hear when you coach them?" Fisher wondered of the approach of playing music at practice. "I'm trying to coach them at the same time. Are they going to listen to the song, or are they going to listen to me?"

Another difference: Sumlin, considered a keen offensive mind, relied on his coaches to lead position meetings. Quarterback Nick Starkel said Fisher, another offensive-minded coach, can't help himself – he's clutching the remote control in meetings among the quarterbacks.

"It's not your typical head coach, where your head coach really isn't in position meetings," Starkel said. "He's up there running our position meetings – he's running the clicker, fast forward and rewind and everything. Pointing this out, pointing (that) out ...

Texas A & M says it is reviewing allegations of possible NCAA violations by football coaches made by a former player who transferred to Arizona. Jimbo Fisher ’s ex-player levels a ton of accusations at Texas A & M .

"It's a lot different, but it makes it so much more personal. It makes me really want to play for him, to compete for him."

Sure, there are a few buzzwords that come along with most any new coaching regimes: More physicality, focus and so on. But in this case it's not lip service, at least based on the recent past at A&M.

Sumlin's predecessor in College Station, Mike Sherman, had a reputation as a tough, demanding coach, and the Aggies finished 9-4 in 2010, which matched Sumlin's second-best record with the Aggies.

But when A&M slipped back to a 6-6 regular season in 2011, Sherman was fired after four seasons.

When A&M hired Sumlin from UH, there was hardly any discourse about how much tougher things were under the new guy.

Instead, it was all about Sumlin's up-tempo, spread offense, and the approach worked in A&M's first season in the SEC of 2012, with the 11-2 mark. Then the likes of Alabama coach Nick Saban adjusted – meanwhile Sumlin never beat LSU under any circumstances – and the Aggies gained a reputation as a soft program in a tough division.

The players Fisher inherited from Sumlin have time and again referred to the "little things" under the new coach – as in the little things add up to the big thing of competing for a conference title.

"He's professional, very detail-oriented," linebacker Tyrel Dodson said of Fisher. "He likes being on time for everything. He's just different. The little things matter to him, and it's starting to show up in practice. He's setting a high standard."

Fisher owns no intention of easing up along the way, as A&M tries winning its first league title in at least 20 years this fall.

"We're getting more physical every day," said Fisher, whose first spring drills at A&M wrap up with the annual Maroon & White game on April 14 at Kyle Field. "We're trying to do a better job with that. We're getting more physical as we go, and we're going to keep developing that every day. The game is a physical game – I don't care how skilled you are.

"Everybody can do (something) right once. But how many guys can do it right 80 times in a row? That's what football becomes, putting your hat and hands in the right place over and over, and playing with power."

Texas A&M is breaking out all the stops to welcome Jimbo Fisher to Aggieland for his first spring game as the team’s new head coach. Well, flag football at least.
