While all drivers clamor for attention for themselves, their teams and their sponsors, the old guard vs. the young guard drama has taken on a life of its own. And few seem to be taking any offense to it.

“It’s a cool promotion,” Harvick said. “I like the promotion if you like good marketing, but if you like winners, you go for the old guys. I love every one of those kids on the poster. I think they’re all great for our sport. I am not taking personal digs at them. I’m trying to have as much fun with it and, as I told them, they should have fun with it, too.

"That’s really what it’s about. It’s the dad and the kid sitting in the grandstands from two different generations.”

The idea for the TMS promotion came to track president Eddie Gossage when he was at Daytona International Speedway and the youth movement was being pushed. It’s lost some steam since veteran drivers have dominated the first six races. It’s also interesting because few if any of the seven “new kids” — Darrell Wallace Jr., Daniel Suarez, Ryan Blaney, Erik Jones, William Byron, Alex Bowman and Chase Elliott – have heard of the band.

“We were actually just talking about it in the hauler and I don’t know the New Kids on the Block,” said Jones, who is 12th in the standings with three top-10 finishes this year. “I was born in 1996 and the last year they were a group was 1995.”

Jones, 21, thinks one of the reasons the young drivers are getting so much attention is their willingness to do more events than some of the veteran drivers who have commitments with families.

Suarez, 26, sees how that push could rub some of the established stars who built a following the wrong way. But that doesn’t mean he doesn’t like the extra exposure.

“They [veterans] have a very strong fan base and they have, obviously a lot of support,” said Suarez. “They have pretty much the path already made, and I feel like for young drivers sometimes we need that extra push to start making that path and to start building that fan base and there is nothing wrong to have that extra support.”
