Herm Edwards talks about cutting scholarship players at Arizona State Herm Edwards is making it clear that he is trying to run his Arizona State football team like an NFL franchise. Edwards, who is in his first year as the Sun Devils’ head coach, said on Tuesday that the program’s players are fighting for their scholarships and facing cuts.“There was a message sent, and the message was very clear that we’re in the process of evaluating players between now and next week,” Edwards said, via the Arizona Republic. “You’re going to find whether you continue to be part of it or not. I told them that when I first took the job.

The Stanford Cardinal did a pretty cool thing at the conclusion of their spring game on Saturday.

After a solid performance, the team surprised junior walk-on quarterback Jack Richardson with a scholarship.

“Jack Richardson is the most improved player on the team,” Stanford coach David Shaw said, via Palo Alto Online. “From where he was when he walked on campus to now, he’s bigger, he’s stronger, he’s more athletic, his arm is stronger, and he’s got a great understanding of the offense. We feel like Jack can go in a game and help us out if we need him to.”

Richardson, the only healthy quarterback on the roster, said the scholarship meant a lot to him.

“It means a lot,” Richardson said. “Being a walk-on really makes me appreciate the grind of sports and what my parents have sacrificed. It’s what I worked for.”

Walk-on players earning scholarships are always really cool moments. It looks like Richardson might get some game time, too, and he looks to have earned it.
