Rooney’s rise to Premier League stardom began as a teenaged striker with Everton in 2002. He followed up four seasons with the Toffees with 13 seasons with Man United, becoming the club’s record goalscorer while winning five Premier League titles and the Champions League.

Rooney, who is also the all-time leading scorer for the British national team, rejoined Everton for the 2017-18 season and is the club’s top scorer this year with 11 goals.

But according to the Daily Mail, Rooney told Everton brass on Wednesday that he was ready to accept an offer from DC United. The deal cannot be made official until the MLS mid-season transfer window opens on July 10.

Sky Sports reported that it would take a “significant change of heart” by Rooney and his family to change their minds about coming to the U.S.

Rooney has had a strained relationship with eight-place Everton this season. He grew angry with manager Sam Allardyce when he removed him from a match against Liverpool last month. Allardyce has reportedly told Rooney he could pursue another club because he would potentially be facing reduced playing time next season.

Rooney would become the highest paid DC player, but United could sure use a lift from a proven veteran. The club is currently tied with San Jose with five points at the bottom of the MLS standings.

In truth, it would be a step backward.
