Michael William Krzyzewski (/ʃɪˈʒɛfski/ shih-ZHEF-skee; nicknamed "Coach K"; born February 13, 1947) is an American college basketball coach and former player. Since 1980, he has served as the head men' s basketball coach at Duke University

As a private school, Duke is not required to make its employment contracts public. The tax document – which Duke provided Tuesday in response to a request from USA TODAY Sports – provides no details about the period over which Krzyzewski accrued the previously reported deferred compensation and in what amounts.

The return did say that in 2016 Krzyzewski was among a group of university employees who participated in, and received payments under, a deferred compensation plan. The 2016 amount for Krzyzewski was reported as $1,610,000.

Krzyzewski’s net take for 2016 likely would have made him second to Kentucky’s John Calipari in terms of college basketball coaches’ pay from their schools for the 2015-16 season, according to figures compiled by USA TODAY Sports. Calipari made $6.58 million from Kentucky that season; he reported just under $300,000 in additional athletically related outside income.

A few private schools – including Baylor, Notre Dame and Syracuse – provide some information in their tax filings about coaches’ pay that might be regarded as outside income. Duke provides no such information for its coaches.

Duke new return reports Krzyzewski’s pay as:

►$2,673,733 in base pay, an amount virtually unchanged from the amount reported for him for 2015.

►$1,375,000 in bonus and incentive compensation, which represents a $600,000 decrease in what Krzyzewski received in 2015. In 2015, Krzyzewski got his 1,000th career victory and his fifth national championship.

►$1,299,814 in retirement and other deferred compensation.

►$1,675,116 in other reportable compensation that likely included the $1,246,799 in previously reported deferred compensation.

►$24,543 in non-taxable benefits.

Without stating the category of income, the return said Kryzewski’s compensation total included “some benefit that was grossed up to compensate for withholding of taxes,” and the value of charter travel services that were not for business purposes.

Watch former Duke player Jayson Tatum fail miserably at spelling Krzyzewski .
We can't either.
