The Nats were swept by the Red Sox and might be in trouble

The Nats were swept by the Red Sox and might be in trouble The Nationals were swept by the Red Sox this week, and outscored 18-7 in the process. The Nats have had a very up-and-down 2018 to this point, and there’s been more down than up. They kicked off their March and April with a 13-16 record that saw them in fourth place in the NL East, 5.5 games behind the [checks notes] ...Mets? Sure, why not. In May, the Nats looked more like the team everyone expected them to be, outscoring opponents 119-71 to push them to a 20-7 record that left them half-a-game behind the Braves for first in the East at month’s end.

Manny Machado Trade Talks Have Reportedly Accelerated. Two top 75-100 prospects is an overpay, so Orioles fans shouldn’t be upset with that offer at all. If the Orioles wanted to cash in, they should have traded for him at last year’s deadline.

The recent indication is that trade chatter on Orioles star Manny Machado has picked up of late. Morosi adds that the O’s are interested in young D-Backs prospect Jon Duplantier, whose current injury has “complicated” efforts to put together a package that suits both teams.

The unquestioned headline at this year’s MLB Trade Deadline is Baltimore Orioles superstar Manny Machado. After three years of escalated arbitration resolutions, the third overall pick of the 2010 draft is set to hit the unrestricted, open market.

It’s not a matter of “if” at this point for a blockbuster Machado trade, but “when.” Not only is he not going to consider Baltimore over the winter in free agency, but the Orioles are also a league-worst 26-66.

Manny Machado continues to be way too honest ahead of free agency

Manny Machado continues to be way too honest ahead of free agency On Wednesday, Baltimore Orioles’ star Manny Machado opened some eyes by more or less saying he insists on being a shortstop for the team that signs him this upcoming offseason. Via the Baltimore Sun:On the question of whether he’ll continue to be a shortstop through free agency, the position he moved to from third base this year, he was unequivocal on shortstop being the position he will sign to play. Manny Machado Trade Talks Have Reportedly Accelerated. The Orioles aren’t getting a boatload for Machado , just like the Jays aren’t going to get a boatload of prospects for Donaldson. Yes, they will get something but the market value is going to be a lot less than most of the suggestions in this chat.

Machado , 25, has long stood out as an on-paper trade candidate given his proximity to free agency and the Orioles ’ lack of starting pitching. Chance Adams and Justus Sheffield are nice prospects but neither one of them is a Manny Machado type impact player, You aren’t trading 2 future #1

40 games under .500 before the All-Star Game (but only .5 games “ahead” of the Kansas City Royals for next year’s first pick) is a tough pill to swallow.

Even tougher are their lack of options on the trade front. And by lack of options, I don’t mean suitors. Teams like the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers, Arizona Diamondbacks, Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs are already lined up at the door with trade offers.

Where their lack of options lie is in their return. They have zero leverage with Machado, or all-star closer Zach Britton for that matter and could be one of the most valuable “throw-ins” in recent memory.

I’d love if Orioles General Manager Dan Duquette’s inbox got the SONY hack treatment and we could see the exciting lowball offers he’s received for Machado over the past several months.

Phillies reportedly interested in Zach Britton

Phillies reportedly interested in Zach Britton The Phillies are tied for first place in the NL East with the Atlanta Braves, something that was unexpected for either team going into the season. Now, they are looking to improve their roster come the second half of the season to make their playoff push.To do so they are looking to acquire a big name from the Baltimore Orioles, but it is not Manny Machado. They have shown interest in Orioles reliever Zach Britton.

MLB Trade Rumors rounds up the latest trade chatter surrounding Orioles superstar Manny Machado . Said Mozeliak: “If you’re trading away two to three prospects that have a combined 18 years of control… for one [year]? That doesn’t sit well with me.”

“Danny boy, why have Justus Sheffield when you can have Domingo German AND Tyler Wade AND Clint Frazier?! Remember how much people used to like Clint Frazier?!”

“Come on Dan, you know nobody can beat Jay Groome. So what if he’s hurt. He’s gonna be amazazing. Tommy John is the new Jenny Craig.”

“Dan. Take Keibert Ruiz and Keibert Ruiz alone. Manny’s gone regardless. He hates seafood.”

In reality, and obviously in my opinion, Duquette and the Orioles' best offer is one that doesn’t contain a single prospect.

The idea of dealing your star player is obviously not new. Fresh on my mind is the recently written aboutMark Teixeira epic of 2007 between the Atlanta Braves and Texas Rangers.

The Rangers were on the up at that point with some optimism in store. The Orioles are in a tough spot from top to bottom. Prior to the season, John rated them 23rd in his farm system rankings.

They’re holding onto hope with MiLB graduate Chance Sisco and praying that Ryan Mountcastle is the real deal. Austin Hays also lingers about and Hunter Harvey has never given up a run in the bigs.

Report: Yankees could give up on Manny Machado and switch targets

Report: Yankees could give up on Manny Machado and switch targets The New York Yankees may be running into roadblocks in their trade pursuit of Baltimore Orioles shortstop Manny Machado. According to Andy Martino of SNY, the Yankees are reluctant to part with top pitching prospect Justus Sheffield in a Machado trade, which could ultimately leave them behind the Los Angeles Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies in the bidding.

MLBTR rounds up the latest trade chatter surrounding Orioles superstar Manny Machado . No, the impact prospects that Machado will cost are not worth MAYBE having a slightly better chance of signing him next year, especially when you’re going to have to pay through the nose either way.

Unfortunately, getting an appropriate minor league package for Machado is off the table. However, they should be able to do far better than the Detroit Tigers did a year ago for J.D. Martinez, netting Dawel Lugo and two others from Arizona.

Of all the teams interested —and I wrote about this recently— the Yankees control the playing field. They have more to offer in top prospects as well as minor league depth than any other team.

However, Miguel Andujar is shiny and new and no longer in discussions.

Double however, Addison Russell could be.

Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer have played things fast and loose since taking over the Cubs in 2011. After ending the millennium-plus World Series drought, they’ve earned that good will.

Russell, acquired in 2014 from the Oakland A’s in the incomprehensible Jeff Samardzija (I can spell that without Google now and am very proud) trade, is having a career year in 2018 and is still just 24.

A Russell for Machado swap straight-up could be beat by other teams if the Orioles can net three to four prospects of their liking.

Packages with big leaguers rarely happen in a deal like this. In fact, they almost never happen. But the Orioles could buck (and fire the actual Buck while they’re at it) the trend without forfeiting the opportunity to receive young, controllable talent.

Orioles’ Jonathan Schoop left a vacation to say goodbye to Machado

Orioles’ Jonathan Schoop left a vacation to say goodbye to Machado Jonathan Schoop showed just how tight of a bond teammates can have. The Baltimore Orioles infielder said on Friday that he left a vacation early so he could drive to Manny Machado’s house for an in-person goodbye after the shortstop was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers. MASN’s Steve Melewski shared the comments of Schoop, who says he started to cry when saying goodbye to Machado.Jonathan Schoop left a lake vacaction to drive to Manny's house for an in person goodbye – "I broke down like a kid. I cried when I went to his house. I won't see him because he's a Dodger. I broke down and started to cry.

Headlines. Manny Machado Trade Talks Have Reportedly Accelerated. Despite Machado ’s best efforts, the Orioles are off to a nightmarish start (7-20) and already sit 9.5 games out of a wild-card spot. (And plenty of top 100 prospects have flopped, the numbers are no guarantee.)

Russell has three more years of team control through 2021. Albert Almora Jr. has four.

The Cubs sixth overall pick from 2012 is also putting together the best season of his very young career. He’s also 24.

The obsession with prospects —and the years of development and control that come with them— has never been at the fever pitch it is now. However, is there any offer that the Yankees, Dodgers, Diamondbacks, Red Sox or any other team can make that beats Russell/Almora from the Cubs?

Jason Heyward obviously isn’t currently beloved in Wrigleyville, but Almora is nevertheless stuck in a platoon amongst a crowded Cubs depth chart. Machado would slide into short for Russell and the Orioles would get two established, young and controllable potential big league stars to build around.

It’s not your conventional trade, but it makes a ton of sense.
