The Senators announced they have signed alternate captain Mark Stone to a one-year contract, avoiding an arbitration hearing scheduled for Friday.

The contract is worth $7.35 million. The two sides had been far apart in their recent arbitration filings, with Stone requesting $9 million and the Senators offering $5 million.

Stone was the team's co-leading scorer last season with 62 points (20 goals, 42 assists) in just 58 games. He has been a mainstay of Ottawa's front line since his first full-time NHL season in 2014-15.

The right wing's other numbers are equally as impressive. According to NHL.com, he has 381 takeaways since the 2014-15 season, which is the most in the NHL and 84 more than the next-closest player. He also led the team last season in the plus-minus category (+9) and led Senators forwards in minutes per game (20.40).

The Senators drafted the Winnipeg native in the sixth round (178th overall) of the 2010 NHL Draft.

Tkachuk won't return to BU, will sign with Senators .
The Senators selected Tkachuk No. 4 overall in June's entry draft. Now that Tkachuk has decided not to go back to Boston University for his sophomore season, the right move for the Senators should be to allow him to play the minimum of nine games and then send him to the Ontario Hockey League, where the London Knights own his rights. He’ll get to continue playing at a high level, be eligible to represent the U.S. at the 2019 World Junior Championship and the team doesn’t burn a year of his ELC.
