Tar Heels to name playing floor in coach Roy Williams' honor

Tar Heels to name playing floor in coach Roy Williams' honor North Carolina is honoring Hall of Fame basketball coach Roy Williams by putting his name on the playing floor. UNC announced Thursday that it will dedicate ''Roy Williams Court'' on Aug. 24. Williams has 842 career victories as head coach at Kansas and UNC, including three NCAA championships in 15 seasons with the Tar Heels. He was also an assistant under late Hall of Fame coach Dean Smith at UNC for 10 seasons.Athletics director Bubba Cunningham says Williams ''didn't want this honor, but his players and our staff wanted it for him.

Two recent NFL mainstays will add their names to the growing list of high-profile ex-NFL players, coaches and executives who will work with the Alliance of American Football.

Michael Vick‘s set to be affiliated with the AAF, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports. Vick will call plays for the Brad Childress-coached Atlanta franchise.

Vick worked with Childress recently as well, serving as a coaching intern with the Chiefs during their 2017 training camp when Childress was on Kansas City’s staff. Vick last played for the 2015 Steelers. The former Falcons quarterback joins Troy Polamalu, Hines Ward and Jared Allen in attaching their names to the new venture.

Ravens penalized twice for illegal helmet hits

Ravens penalized twice for illegal helmet hits In late May, Ravens coach John Harbaugh predicted that the new helmet rules would affect only five percent of the league’s coaches. The Ravens already have been penalized twice for violating the new rule that prohibits lowering the helmet and initiating contact, and as of this posting there’s still plenty of time to play in the annual Hall of Fame game.

Former NFL quarterback Michael Vick has been hired as the offensive coordinator for an Atlanta-based football team in the Alliance of American Football, the league announced. Chicago Bears offensive assistant Brad Childress will serve as the team's head coach .

Former Minnesota Vikings head coach Brad Childress will be Atlanta's head coach , and his offensive coordinator will be former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick . Atlanta becomes the second confirmed market for AAF , which previously announced an Orlando franchise.

At least one NFL team is helping the AAF prepare for what figures to be an interesting talent-gathering period. The Bears provided the AAF’s Phoenix franchise’s GM, Phil Savage, a list of players to scout while he was at Chicago’s camp, Fowler notes. The AAF plans to primarily target players that don’t make NFL rosters this year.

Set to launch in February 2019, the eight-team league has its head coaches signed up and contract structure set at three-year, $250K agreements. The $83K-per-year contracts, which include out clauses in case an NFL team comes calling, are non-guaranteed and fall well short of NFL practice squad salaries (up to $129K for a 17-week season this season). But NFL practice squad spots will assuredly be more coveted real estate than AAF rosters next year. Although, incentives will be available in these AAF deals, and marketing and public appearances can trigger these bonuses, per Fowler.

Capitals hire Arniel, Cashman as assistant coaches

Capitals hire Arniel, Cashman as assistant coaches The Washington Capitals have hired Scott Arniel and Reid Cashman as assistants on coach Todd Reirden's staff. Reirden was promoted from associate coach to fill Barry Trotz's role. For all the continuity on their roster, the Capitals have undergone the most change behind the bench this summer. Coach Barry Trotz resigned after winning the Cup in his fourth season and went to the New York Islanders, taking assistant Lane Lambert and goaltending coordinator Mitch Korn with him.

Now the AAF has tapped another football icon to coach a team based in an area where he has strong ties. Atlanta I’m excited to be back! @TheAAF pic.twitter.com/fHFK28kpXi. — Michael Vick (@ MichaelVick ) April 25, 2018.

Michael Vick will announce the Falcons' second-round pick in the NFL Draft on Friday night, but that won't be his only connection to pro football in Atlanta in the near future. Nice move by the AAF .

NFL personnel have lamented the lack of a developmental league in the years since NFL Europe’s demise, and Fowler writes the AAF may be closer to the NBA’s G League, rather than serving as competition.

“Our objective is to take some of those people who can’t quite make it and make them into quality NFL players,” AAF exec Bill Polian said, via Fowler.
