Lemoore, Calif. - Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2018 - The World Surf League (WSL) today announced that it will award equal prize money to male and female athletes for every WSL-controlled event in the 2019 season and beyond, becoming the first and only US based global sports league

World Surf League CEO Sophie Goldschmidt said prize money equality is part of a long-range strategy to elevate The WSL currently has prize money parity, Goldschmidt said, for the 36 men and 18 women on tour. Goldschmidt said prize money for the 2019 tour has yet to be determined, but

"We're very proud of this moment," said World Surf League CEO Sophie Goldschmidt. "It's a natural step for us, it's been part of a long journey where we've continued to invest and increase our support of women's surfing."

The establishment of equal prize money, which comes from a mix of sponsorships and private funding, is part of a longterm strategic plan to promote and grow women's surfing across the world.

Five years ago, the new WSL ownership added more women's events to the Championship Tour, taking them from 8 events to the 10 they compete in now. They also upped the quality of the events for women, adding stops at J-Bay, Fiji, Keramas, Trestles, and Maui. In addition to committing to equal marketing and promotion for women, the league also added women to the Big Wave Tour in 2016.

"For us, it's not just about the prize money," said Goldschmidt. "It's about everything else that goes with it, like allowing women to have a full schedule of events, to showcase their skills in the best locations, and the additional marketing and promotion."

For 2018, the total prize purse for the WSL Championship Tour men's events is $607,800 which gets shared among 36 athletes depending on how they finish. For women's events, it's $303,900 shared among 18 athletes. Per the league, competitors take home an average of $16,883 per event.
