Nolan Arenado among unresolved 2019 arbitration cases

Nolan Arenado among unresolved 2019 arbitration cases Friday's arbitration deadline wasn’t a firm date for agreeing to terms. Rather, it was the end of the period to negotiate before submitting numbers for possible hearings. Negotiations can continue thereafter, but teams and players will now have to defend their submission numbers if they can’t bridge the gap before a hearing. Baseball arb panels simply pick one side’s number; that aspect of the process is designed to force the parties to the bargaining table. Rockies star Nolan Arenado is headed for a record arbitration salary, unsurprisingly. The question is by how much.

Nolan Arenado is set to be the crown jewel of next year's free agent market, but the Rockies hope he never gets there.

Arenado requested what would've been a record $30 million from the Rockies for his services in 2019, but Colorado countered at $24 million. Either way, that's an absurd number, but Arenado is holding out for a solid middle ground. The star third baseman is likely to set a single-season arbitration record when his case is settle.

The Rockies hope to sign Arenado to a long-term contract before free agency as to avoid the risk of losing the face of their franchise. Coming off making the playoffs in 2018, dealing with the Arenado drama would be an unwelcome distraction in Denver this coming season.

Arenado has made the All-Star team in each of the past four seasons, hitting over 37 home runs and recording over 110 RBIs every year since 2015. And not to mention, he's one of the best fielding third-basemen in baseball, winning a gold glove award in each of his six seasons in the big leagues.

The Houston Astros submitted their arbitration bids yesterday after signing fellow arb-eligibles Lance McCullers Jr., Will Harris and Brad Peacock to one-year deals.
