Man leading search for Sala's plane says wreckage found The man leading a private search for the missing plane carrying Argentine soccer player Emiliano Sala says the wreckage has been found. David Mearns, an American-born marine scientist and shipwreck-hunting specialist, announced the discovery on Twitter two weeks after the plane went missing over the English Channel as it flew from France to Wales. Pilot David Ibbotson, the other man on board, was taking Sala to Cardiff where he was to start playing for his new club in the Premier League.

Authorities yet to confirm if remains are that of missing footballer or pilot David Ibbotson.

LONDON (AP) — Authorities have recovered a body from the seabed wreckage of a plane that was carrying soccer player Emiliano Sala and his pilot. The body will be handed over to a coroner, and police are expected to provide a confirmed identity of the body after a full examination.

LONDON — Police have confirmed that the body recovered from a plane in the English Channel is that of Argentine soccer player Emiliano Sala.

Dorset police made the announcement on Thursday evening after a coroner's examination of the body, which was recovered from the seabed wreckage of the plane on Wednesday.

Underwater searches were carried out using specialist vessels on February 3 over the priority search area and, according to AAIB, uncovered an "object of interest" on the seabed. A remotely operated vehicle surveyed the area and, based on analysis of the video footage, investigators have concluded that the object was wreckage from the missing Piper Malibu aircraft.

Sala, who had just signed with Premier League club Cardiff, and pilot David Ibbotson were the only people onboard the small aircraft that disappeared over the English Channel last month.

Investigators have not been able to recover the aircraft, which was flying from Nantes to Cardiff after Sala transferred from the French city's team.
