In 2012 there were 22 franchise tags, in 2019 there are 6

In 2012 there were 22 franchise tags, in 2019 there are 6 The good old days of the franchise tag are gone. Seven years after the franchise tag was used by 22 teams, only six teams decided they wanted to use the tag this offseason. Take a look at the players who got tagged in 2012. Some made sense. Drew Brees was tagged. Drew Brees was very good at football then and is still very good at football now. There were also five kickers and one punter tagged. Seven players that were tagged were offensive players. This year's list consists of five defensive linemen/pass rushers/edge players and one kicker. No one on offense received the tag. The complete list is easy.

As the picture for the NFL offseason begins to come into focus, here are seven likely free agents who will help determine the outcome of the market. Their movement will not only swing how their position shakes out in free agency , but also how their future team fares in 2019 (and perhaps beyond).

Let's have some instant hot take reactions. The following teams are the biggest winners in free agency so far.

Cleveland Browns

This one was easy. They kind of started winning when they were able to signed Kareem Hunt to a cheap deal. Hunt will obviously be suspended by the NFL, but the Browns will have a playmaker in the backfield the minute he returns. Then the Browns did this thing that everyone is making a big deal about. They traded for this Odell Beckham Jr. guy from the New York Giants. Some quick internet searching leads me to believe he's pretty good. The Beckham Jr. trade would have put the Browns at the top of the list to being with. They also landed a bookend edge rusher when they traded for Olivier Vernon. A lot of their moves had nothing to do with actual free agency, but Cleveland is still the big winner of the week.

The Jets have been busy in free agency so far, one of the most active teams in the NFL. Tuesday the phones were off the hook, and while Wednesday and Thursday were not exactly With a few moves in the books, let’s take a look at the biggest winners and losers from free agency so far for New York.

New York Jets

The Jets are trying to rebuild on the fly and give new coach Adam Gase some weapons in his first year in New York. They did a pretty good job. C.J. Mosley may have received a deal slightly higher than some folks thought he should have, but that's what the Jets have to do to land a leader in the middle of the defense. New York also didn't budge in their deal with Le'Veon Bell and get the running back fresh off a year where he sat out for an entire season. The Bell deal actually looks great in hindsight for the Jets - but not much for Bell who was expecting a bit higher payday. The real cherry on top has to be Jamison Crowder who is a very good wide receiver when he can stay healthy.

Antonio Brown won big this week, but former teammate Le'Veon Bell headlined free agency 's losers. The twist in 2019 was a series of trades that stole the headlines. We included those deals in our initial look at the winners and losers of the NFL's 2019 free agent frenzy.

Buffalo Bills

Someone needs to give the Bills credit for some under the radar moves they made. Frank Gore will bring some veteran leadership to the locker room. Cole Beasley will be good enough at the slot receiver spot, except that's not exactly Josh Allen's skill set. What is Allen's skill set is throwing bombs and John Brown will be able to run under those long passes when he burns opposing secondaries with his breakaway speed. Their best move may have been signing Ty Nsekhe at tackle. Mitch Morse and Spencer Long will help the interior of the Bills offensive line.

Oakland Raiders

The Raiders traded for Antonio Brown and landed Tyrell Williams in free agency which should shore up a receiving corps that didn't have much talent at the end of the last season. The Raiders also landed Lamarcus Joyner who will take his talents from Los Angeles to Oakland and eventually Las Vegas. They may have overpaid for Trent Brown who had one great year in New England, but the Raiders had a ton of holes and they filled enough to be competitive next year.

Green Bay Packers

The Packers actually spent money in free agency this year which is a departure from their old regime. That's why the new regime is in place apparently. They landed two edge rushers in Preston Smith and Za'Darius Smith. I am now waiting for some Agent Smith or Matrix nicknames. They also stole Adrian Amos from the division rival Bears.

Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jaguars make this list because they landed Nick Foles. It's basically the only move they've made other than cutting players to create space for Nick Foles.

Detroit Lions

If the Lions goal was to become Patriots Midwest, then they are winners.
