Players Championship 2019: Tiger Woods makes rally-killing quadruple bogey at TPC Sawgrass' famous par-3 17th hole

Players Championship 2019: Tiger Woods makes rally-killing quadruple bogey at TPC Sawgrass' famous par-3 17th hole Players Championship 2019: Tiger Woods had a ton of momentum as he stepped up to the 17th hole. Then, a disaster happened

After bogey -free round , Tiger Woods 'thankful' back issues are in the past. "I've gone back to that and just been so thankful that I had the opportunity to start chipping again, start progressing," Woods said Saturday at TPC Boston, where he shot a 5-under-par 66 at the Dell Technologies Championship.

Tiger Woods officially put a new putter in his bag on Friday for the first round of the Dell Technologies Championship. The bad news? It was a bogey putt. Woods found the left hazard on No. 10 at TPC Boston with his opening tee shot.

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. - Standing off the side of the 18th green Thursday evening at TPC Sawgrass, Tiger Woods grabbed his head with his right hand and squeezed the olive green cap bearing the initials "TW."

Woods became a global brand and the greatest golfer of his generation by making putts when he needed them.

Woods did not necessarily need the 4-footer for par that slid by on the final hole of his opening round of The Players Championship. Based on his reaction while he waited for Webb Simpson to finish on 18, Woods sure would have liked to have made it.

Players Championship 2019: A 'ticked' off Tiger Woods fought back on Friday, but will it be enough? Tiger got to within two of the lead before his ugly quad on the 17th hole changed everything on Friday. His 71 keeps him around the weekend but can he contend?

Tiger Woods ' first round at the Players in three years contained a big highlight (an eagle on the par-5 9th) and a big save (a 15-foot bogey putt on 18). Keep it right here all day for the latest news, scores and highlights from Tiger 's round as he tries to make it to the weekend at TPC Sawgrass.

Woods failed to make another birdie the rest of the way, and a double- bogey 5 after hitting his tee shot in the water at the par-3 17th marred an otherwise impressive comeback bid. The inability to close has been noticeable on a few occasions this year as Woods ' has made his comeback to the PGA Tour.

Instead of ending his day with a clutch up-and-down and some momentum, Woods would have to sleep on a closing bogey for a 2-under par 70.

"I felt like I could have got something in the 60s today," he said.

Instead, Woods failed to fully capitalize on five back-nine birdies and turned in a scorecard featuring a little bit of everything.

After posting a mundane, even-par 36 on front nine, Woods managed just one par over his final nine holes and made three bogeys, courtesy of three mistakes he will have to clean up if he hopes to contend on the weekend.

"Usually if I had one par, it's usually shooting 30 or 29, not what I did today," Woods quipped.

Instead, Woods sits five shots behind co-leaders Tommy Fleetwood and Keegan Bradley heading into the second round.

When Woods, the 2001 and 2013 winner at TPC, tees off at 8:32 a.m. Friday, he'll look to take advantage of more favorable scoring conditions.

Following a relatively calm morning, the winds were whipping Thursday afternoon, magnifying the challenge of designer Pete Dye's layout - even playing at a mere 7,088 yards.

"Hopefully we can catch it on the calm side and some smoother greens and post a low number," Woods said, "and then see if the guys have to face what we had to face in the afternoon with the wind moving pretty good."

Woods likely will need to go a low Friday to give himself a chance to become the first golfer to win three times at TPC Sawgrass. Yet, he still took away some encouraging signs from Thursday's opening round.

After withdrawing last week from the Arnold Palmer Invitational due to a neck strain, Woods said he played pain free. Most of the day, the 43-year-old swung with with speed and confidence, but a handful of mishits proved costly.

Woods snap hook off the tee traveled 189 yards on the 532-yard par-5 second hole, forcing him to play it as a three-shot hole and ultimately settle for a par. Later, he blocked his tee shot on the daunting par-4 14th hole into the right rough. His approach shot came up short, and he eventually would miss an 8-foot par putt.

Woods' biggest miscalculation came on the par-5 11th hole.

Woods faced a 251-yard approach shot to give himself an opportunity for eagle, but his 3-wood got caught up in the meaty, intermediate rough, leading a 240-yard effort that found the water hazard. Woods made a bogey.

He ended the day even-par on the four par-5s, the holes Woods often dominates when he wins.

On the brighter side, Woods' putting - his bugaboo early in the season - was much improved prior to his costly 18th-hole miss. Arguably the game's best putter of all time, Woods had 14 three-putts during his first three starts this season. On Thursday, he had none, made 107 feet of putts and finished the day 16th in stroke gained putting in the 144-player field.

"I felt like I rolled it today," he said. "I felt like I was able to get up there, and I felt comfortable. I was able to rip it, and I felt pretty good."

Woods also kept his emotions in check.

As expected, the day's largest galleries followed Woods' every move. Some fans, including 16-year-old Antonio Pontigo of Jacksonville, were dressed head to toe in tiger outfits ordered on Amazon.

When Woods reached the tee box for the par-3 17th hole island green, the stadium seating, the luxury boxes and hillsides surrounding the area were packed.

The buzz finally subsided as Woods stood over his golf ball and faced the 121-yard shot over water. But before Woods could get settled, a fan bellowed, "Tiger!!"

Boos soon rained down as Woods backed off the shot. Once he was regained his focus, Woods hit his shot to inside 15 feet. He then made the putt, leading the crowd to erupt.

Yet Woods' day would end with a collective groan from the gallery surrounding the 18th hole, when he missed his par putt. The frustration of Woods and his fans were hard to hide.

With 54 holes to go, though, Woods has plenty to time to make up ground.

"He's patient," Golf Channel analyst Frank Nobilo. "He knows that the score will actually come back to him. This tournament is going to be all about the weekend."
