SportPlayers Championship 2019: Tiger Woods makes rally-killing quadruple bogey at TPC Sawgrass' famous par-3 17th hole
The best shots we've ever seen hit on TPC Sawgrass' 17th hole
The par-3, island green, 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass is arguably the most famous par-3 hole in golf. Through the years, there have been countless memorable moments on the tricky hole, which has yielded eight holes in one, listed here: 2017 - Sergio Garcia, first round 2016 - Will Wilcox, second round 2002 - Miguel Angel Jimenez, first round 2000 - Paul Azinger, third round 1999 - Joey Sindelar, first round 1997 - Fred Couples, fourth round 1991 - Brian Claar, third round 1986 - Brad Fabel, first round We could easily point to those eight shots as the best we've ever seen on the 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass.
The momentum was officially building for Tiger Woods on Friday at TPC Sawgrass. Three birdies in his first seven holes put Tiger two shots back of the lead as he headed to the famous island green par-3 17th. That's when things went terribly, terribly wrong for Tiger.
The two-time Players champion has never had a good history at the hole. Over his career, Tiger entered his second round 1-over par across 68 previous rounds at the Florida layout. Make that 5-over par through 69 holes after Friday.
Players Championship 2019: A 'ticked' off Tiger Woods fought back on Friday, but will it be enough?
Tiger got to within two of the lead before his ugly quad on the 17th hole changed everything on Friday. His 71 keeps him around the weekend but can he contend?
We'll let the video do the talking, but really, the first shot wasn't that bad. It was just a little long—likely with Tiger fired up after the run of birdies, including one at the previous hole, the par-5 16th hole. All it takes is a little imprecision at Pete Dye's 17th hole, and it will cost you.
That adventure, and the ensuing quadruple-bogey 7, knocked Tiger all the way down to 1-under on the leader board (after he was T-8 and two back of the lead). Now, Tiger will be fighting to make the cut, as the cut line is currently 1-under.
