Nate Oats is heading to Alabama.

The school has hired Oats to be its next basketball coach, it announced Wednesday. Oats had spent the last four seasons in the same position at Buffalo.

Oats guided the Bulls to three NCAA Tournament appearances during his time with the program. The team advanced to the Round of 32 in each of the last two seasons, notching victories over Arizona and Arizona State.

The 44-year-old, who was named the 2018-19 MAC Coach of the Year, recently signed an extension that would have kept him at Buffalo through 2024. He finishes with a 96-43 record with the Bulls.

Nathanael J. Oats (born October 13, 1974) is an American basketball coach , currently the head basketball coach at the University of Alabama . Oats grew up in Watertown, Wisconsin where he was a three-year starter on a high school basketball team which went 24–0 in his senior year.

Oats spent 11 seasons as a high school coach before he was hired as an assistant on Bobby Hurley’s staff at Buffalo. He was promoted when Hurley left for Arizona State.

Alabama fired former coach Avery Johnson earlier this week after four seasons. The Crimson Tide have reached the big dance just twice since 2006-07, including once under Johnson.
