Holly Warlick spent most of her life preparing to run the Tennessee women's basketball program, but when she finally got the chance to take over, she could never quite match her legendary predecessor's success.

Warlick was fired Wednesday by her alma mater despite reaching the NCAA Tournament in all seven seasons at the helm.

"Holly and I met this afternoon, and I informed her of the decision to change leadership within the program," athletic director Phillip Fulmer said in a release. "Holly has dedicated most of her adult life to the University of Tennessee and the Lady Vols program. She loves Tennessee, and Tennessee needs to always love her back. The move was not a surprise, as rumors about Warlick's job status had swirled with Tennessee firmly on the bubble of even making the NCAA Tournament before bowing out in the first round to UCLA last week.

That loss meant the Lady Vols finished at 19-13 — the first time the school failed to win at least 20 games in a season since 1975-76, the second year of the program's existence. Warlick joined the team as a guard the following season and spent most of the last four-plus decades in Knoxville.

A three-time All-America selection as a player, she returned to Tennessee as an assistant on Pat Summitt's staff in 1985 and was immediately named to replace the legendary coach in 2012 after Summitt stepped down to deal with the effects of Alzheimer's disease.
