Former Chiefs head coach and longtime NFL assistant coach Gunther Cunningham has died.

Cunningham died on Saturday after a brief illness. He was 72 years old and is survived by his wife, children and grandson among other family members and loved ones.

Cunningham was born in Germany and grew up in California before going to the University of Oregon to play football. He moved into coaching at the school in 1969 and took his first NFL job with the Colts in 1982. He worked for the Chargers and Raiders before becoming the Chiefs’ defensive coordinator in 1995.

He would stay in that job for four years before succeeding Marty Schottenheimer as the head coach for the 1999 season. Cunningham went 16-16 over two years before being fired.

He was 72 . Fitzsimmons was head coach at Kansas State for two seasons, earning Big Eight coach of the year honors in Fitzsimmons began his coaching career at Moberly Junior College in Missouri, going 223-59 in nine seasons, winning two national titles and twice being named JC coach of the year.

Former Kansas City Chiefs head coach Frank Gansz died Monday, the team announced. He was 70. Gansz spent 24 seasons as an NFL coach and a total of 38 seasons as a coach on the college and NFL levels. Gansz's last job was coaching special teams for SMU in 2008.

Cunningham would return to Kansas City as the defensive coordinator from 2004-2008 and had the same job with the Lions from 2009-2013. He last worked as a senior assistant in Detroit from 2014-2016.

Bob Maxwell, the nation's oldest recipient of the Medal of Honor, died this weekend at 98 in Bend, Ore., according to local newspaper The Bulletin. Maxwell received the nation's highest military decoration for a 1944 incident during his service in World War II when he threw himself on a grenade that was thrown into the midst of his unit in Besancon, France, saving several lives. Maxwell had thrown a blanket over the grenade before jumping on it, which kept the blast from killing him, The Bulletin reported.
