Sale strikes out 17 in 7 innings, Rockies top Red Sox in 11

Sale strikes out 17 in 7 innings, Rockies top Red Sox in 11 BOSTON (AP) Red Sox ace Chris Sale struck out a career-high 17 in just seven innings before getting pulled after 108 pitches on a chilly Tuesday night, and the Colorado Rockies rallied against Boston's bullpen to win 5-4 in the 11th. Sale became the first pitcher in major league history to fan 17 in a start of no more than seven innings. Boston pitchers combined to strike out 24, but the Red Sox had their five-game winning streak come to an end. Mark Reynolds, whose fifth-inning double was the first runner allowed by Sale, drove in the go-ahead run with a two-out single in the 11th off Ryan Brasier (2-2).

David Price was making his second start since returning from the injured list on Saturday, but it didn't last long.

The Boston Red Sox left-hander seemed to be in a bit of pain during his outing against the Houston Astros, ultimately lasting just three batters before getting pulled. After throwing a pitch at one point, Price appeared to wince, which prompted manager Alex Cora to get Colten Brewer going in the bullpen.

How Dodgers' Lefthander Hyun-Jin Ryu Became One of Baseball's Best Pitchers

How Dodgers' Lefthander Hyun-Jin Ryu Became One of Baseball's Best Pitchers Since the start of the 2018 season, Hyun-Jin Ryu ranks first in ERA and walk rate, second in WHIP, seventh in FIP, and eighth in strikeout rate minus walk rate since the start of the 2018 campaign. That’s quite an unlikely pitcher to be the only one in the top 10 in all five categories. © Provided by TIME Inc. Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images To be clear, I moved the goalposts a bit on this one. Ryu pitched just 82 1/3 innings last year while spending about three months on the IL with a groin injury. He didn’t throw enough innings last year to qualify for the ERA title, so you won’t see him on traditional leaderboards.

David Price landed on the 10-day IL Monday with left elbow tendinitis. The move is retroactive to May 3 , the day after his most recent start . Entering Sunday's game, the Red Sox had officially listed their starting pitchers for the entire Orioles series as "TBD," though Tuesday would have been Price 's

The Red Sox fell one hit shy of the major league record for consecutive hits, getting 10 straight hits against White Sox lefty Manny Banuelos during a nine-run third inning Saturday Boston's slow start this season just adds to the upcoming planning headaches the Red Sox have created for themselves.

BOX SCORE: RED SOX-ASTROS

Price's fastball was topping out at 90 mph, and he managed to just throw 15 pitches. He got Aledmys Diaz to fly out and Alex Bregman to strike out before giving up a single to Michael Brantley, ending his night.

Earlier this month, Price missed 18 days with tendinitis in his pitching elbow, so it's no shock the Red Sox weren't willing to take any chances with his health.
