LEXINGTON, Ky. — Even after John Calipari agreed to terms on a new contract that was designed to end his coaching career at Kentucky, fans should brace for him to be connected with other jobs in the future.

Entering his 11th year at Kentucky, Calipari insists those conversations should not be taken as a sign he will leave Lexington, though.

"I get calls every year from different people, and you know why I’ll talk? At the end of the day I may be able to help somebody else," Calipari said Tuesday when asked if he seriously considered an offer from UCLA earlier this spring. "If I know that I can help somebody else who’s helping assistants, I’ll do that. But I’ll listen to people talk to me. I owe that to the profession, to myself. To say, ‘I’ll never talk to somebody,' ... some of these people that I talk to I’ve been on committees with. I know the guy really well or I know who this person is."

John Clay: Enjoy your summer, John Calipari's giving off good vibrations At his annual summer press conference Tuesday, John Calipari seemed in good spirits. Tanned and relaxed, he didn’t force us to look at snapshots from his European vacation; he joked about son Brad putting his name in the transfer portal and he almost (almost) made it through an entire media session without launching into a full-throated defense of the “one-and-done” system. “I’m really happy with where we are right now,” said the coach when asked about his 2019-20 roster. Why shouldn’t he be? EJ Montgomery is back. Nick Richards is back.

Details about his new contract have not been released, but it is expected to be finalized in the coming weeks. After outlining why he would listen to UCLA or other potential employers interested in his services at a news conference Tuesday, Calipari went out of his way to make it clear he has no plans to leave Lexington.

"Everybody would say, ‘Why would he ever leave Kentucky for anywhere?’ You’re right. Why would I?" He said. "... A better situation, more committed to basketball? Money, staff? Tell me why I would do this. ‘He’s tired of being here, he’s tired of the fans.’ Really? Your whole career you’re trying to get to a point where you’re at a program where it really matters and fans are engaged, you never have to sell a ticket.
