Von Miller: Flacco 'looks like a Super Bowl MVP' at minicamp It's safe to say Joe Flacco is making a good early impression on his Denver Broncos teammates. Kelce is recovering from minor offseason ankle surgery which was previously described as a "cleanup." As of mid-April, Kelce did not have an exact timeline for his recovery, but the ankle was feeling good. There don't appear to be any set backs, but it also doesn't appear that Kelce is going to be ready to return during the month of June.

Coach Reid was asked about Kelce's availability next week, when the Chiefs begin their mandatory minicamp. It doesn't seem that the Chiefs expect Kelce will be available for those three days of practice.

"I don't think next week," Reid said. "I think you'll probably see him at training camp."

Training camp seems to be the goal for Kelce right now and that is fine. Reid added that the younger players are getting great work without Kelce being available to practice. Kelce's position coach, Tom Melvin, spoke last week about how Kelce's absence isn't a big deal. He even thought it might actually help Kelce and the team in the grand scheme of things.

"He understands his body and how to make it work for a full 16-game season and playoffs, and this is actually good for him," Melvin said via Arrowhead Pride's Pete Sweeney. "At this point, usually after your fifth or sixth year in this offense, I tend to give the younger kids more reps than the vets just because of that. He doesn't need all those reps. He needs the specific ones with Patrick on the new stuff we're doing here, but the stuff from last year that we've done, the younger kids can do that stuff. He'll be fine, and it may be better for his body in the long run."

Melvin believes that at this point in Kelce's career, he knows what he needs to do in order to get his body ready for 2019. He's already got the offense and chemistry with Mahomes down, so he isn't missing too much. In fact, Melvin said he'd probably being playing the younger guys more right now even if Kelce wasn't injured. The lack of experience they have behind Kelce is a problem, but getting the younger players repetitions during OTAs and at mandatory minicamp will pay dividends down the line.
