The Tennessee Titans are going to honor the late Steve McNair and his former teammate, Eddie George, at their home opener this coming season.

Titans owner Amy Adams Strunk announced the franchise will retire both of their numbers on Sept. 15, saying, “I know my dad loved these guys. He’d be so happy today.”

McNair was tragically shot dead by a woman on July 4, 2009 in downtown Nashville. A franchise legend who led the Titans to a Super Bowl berth during the 1999 season, McNair also made three Pro Bowls, one All-Pro team and was the NFL Co-MVP in 2003. The No. 3 overall pick in 1995, McNair played 11 seasons with the franchise before finishing his career with the Baltimore Ravens.

MLB-best Twins rally, beat Rays 5-3 in matchup of hot teams The Minnesota Twins beat the Tampa Bay Rays 5-3 Friday night in a matchup of two of the major leagues' hottest teams. Minnesota, a big league-best 38-18, overcame a 3-1 fifth-inning deficit and won for the 13th time in 16 games. The Twins opened a season-high 10 1/2-game in the AL Central. They have scored three or more runs in 24 straight games, matching the Minnesota record for a single season, set in 2006. BOX SCORE: TWINS 5, RAYS 3 Jose Berrios and Taylor Rogers (2-1) combined on a four-hitter and stopped a six-game winning streak by the Rays (35-20), their longest since last August.

The Tennessee Titans are retiring former quarterback Steve McNair ’s No. 9, and former running back Eddie George ’s No. 27 jersey number . The team held a ceremony at St. Thomas Sports Park after Wednesday’s practice and took to Twitter with the news.

Nobody with the Titans will ever wear Eddie George 's No. 27 nor the No. 9 of the late Steve McNair again, players who helped the franchise through its difficult relocation from Houston to Tennessee to its lone Super Bowl berth.

George was McNair’s teammate from 1996-2003. During his heyday, the former first-round pick was among the most dominant running backs of his era. He rushed for at least 1,000 yards in all but one of his eight campaigns with the organization, finishing his career with 10,041 rushing yards and 68 touchdowns.

On Wednesday, George opened up about how special it is to be honored in this fashion, along with McNair, saying, “I couldn’t imagine having a day like this, to have my jersey retired without his. It means a lot.”
