Scott Daniel Warren has argued that his spiritual values compel him to help all people in distress. Prosecutors have argued the two migrants — Kristian Perez-Villanueva and Jose Arnaldo Sacaria-Goday — never were in any real distress. Warren's parents gathered more than 126,000 online petition signatures asking the court to drop the case, which was to go to trial Wednesday in U.S. District Court.

Six college basketball programs involved in the FBI’s investigation into the sport will be hearing from the NCAA about alleged violations this summer.

NCAA vice president Stan Wilcox didn’t name schools when he talked to CBS Sports on Wednesday but said that the Southern District of New York’s legal cases would be a good starting point for who will be targeted regarding potential eligibility violations.

"I would just say that it's clear when you look at the number of cases that were listed by the Southern District of New York, those numbers are more than likely be reflected in the number of cases that are going to be moving forward," said Wilcox, a former Florida State athletic director and Notre Dame basketball player.

Five key offseason questions for the Pelicans

Five key offseason questions for the Pelicans Like the Timberwolves, the Pelicans entered the 2018-19 season hoping to build on a promising return to the playoffs during the previous spring but instead saw their year torpedoed by a trade request that led to a messy public saga. Unlike Minnesota, New Orleans didn’t actually end up trading its star, but that didn’t help the team’s general manager save his job. Dell Demps was dismissed during the season and has since been replaced by David Griffin, a veteran executive who has an NBA championship on his résumé. It's now up to Griffin to decide what to do with Anthony Davis, but it’s not all bad news for the Pelicans’ incoming executive VP of basketball operations.
