Kawhi Leonard free agency rumors: Star may accept short-term deal from Raptors Leonard can opt out of his contract and become a free agent after this season's over. Per TrueHoop: "Of course, he's about to become a free agent. And because of that, as the media you might expect to hear sunny things about Kawhi's return from Raptors sources eager to tamp down the impression Kawhi is bound for the Clippers or another team. "But even before the Finals began, we at TrueHoop heard from plugged-in sources associated with players and the league — but not the team — that Kawhi would return to Toronto, at least on a short-term deal.

Kawhi Anthony Leonard (/kəˈwaɪ/, born June 29, 1991) is an American professional basketball player for the Toronto Raptors of the National Basketball Association (NBA).

Riding the wave of a first-ever NBA title following Thursday night’s win over the Golden State Warriors, Kawhi Leonard and the Toronto Raptors are now facing an interesting summer.

Leonard is set to hit free agency once the market opens in March. Ever since the reigning NBA Finals MVP was acquired in a trade from the Spurs prior to the season, suggestions were that Leonard would be one-and-done in Canada.

We’re not 100 percent sure how the Raptors’ improbable run to the title might impact things. But if we were to ask teammate Danny Green, it could play a role in Leonard’s decision-making process, as he told The Athletic’s Sam Amick:

“I think if we would’ve lost earlier before this series or whatever, I think it would’ve been an easier decision for him. I think now it makes it a little harder knowing that this organization and this team is very capable of doing what we’re doing now, of getting to this stage and possibly winning one. … Also, the relationships he’s built here.”

More than any other member of the Raptors, Green might very well know Leonard’s decision-making process. The two were teammates in San Antonio for seven seasons before being shipped off to Toronto together one year ago next month.

Leonard captivated an entire nation as he led Toronto to its first-ever NBA title. Will that be enough for him to turn down the bright lights of Los Angeles or New York? This remains to be seen.

Did Kawhi Leonard tip hand about leaving Raptors in free agency?

Did Kawhi Leonard tip hand about leaving Raptors in free agency? The way Kawhi Leonard phrased an answer during an interview with ESPN’s Scott Van Pelt after winning the NBA championship on Thursday night has some wondering whether he tipped his hand about his free agency plans.

Teammate Danny Green , who has been with Leonard through his entire career, noted the change of scenery from a system-heavy San Antonio Spurs offense to a more instinctive Raptors flow has helped him bloom into the star he’s shown to be in these playoffs. “Probably the situation here,” Green said

No one knows Kawhi Leonard better on the Toronto Raptors roster than former Spurs teammate Danny Green , and according to the one-time champion, Leonard will have a hard Green was traded alongside Leonard to the Raptors in the trade that sent DeMar DeRozan to the San Antonio Spurs

Regardless, Green feels that Leonard doesn’t owe the city or organization anything:

“You bring a championship to this country, man — not just this city, but this country and this organization — within one year, that’s legendary type stuff. Regardless of what he does, he did his job.”

Free agency opens up in just over two weeks. Leonard will have a decision to make on that front. For now, the Clippers appear favored to land his services.

The Raptors didn't come close to the Finals until the arrival of Leonard, and they made changes to build around him for a championship run. One constant in Toronto's organization is Kyle Lowry, who has spent the last seven seasons with the team. But, despite being a five-time All-Star and maintaining his position as the heartbeat of the Raptors, he found himself in trade rumor talk as the 2019 deadline approached. Lowry has become a Canadian icon, but Toronto's general manager has made it very clear he'll do anything he can to win.
